Handy guide to Madeira
I spent a week in Madeira in February and this was an ideal pocket sized guide which helped us plan a fulfilling week. Highly recommended. PS get a big map to complement it!
Not bad..
My husband and I used this guide on holiday, and were not overly impressed with quite a lot of the recommendations given-
We spent 10 euros each on entry into the Royal Botanical gardens in Monte, described as the best in Funchal, and we found the experience really disappointing. Almost all of the plants we saw were ones that you could find along roadsides, paths and walks in Madeira (rhododendrons, hydrangeas, ferns) and lots of trees. There was also an exhibition with African art, a collection of semi-precious stones (quartz etc), and lots of tacky Japanese replica architecture.
We were also not overly impressed with some of the restaurant suggestions, including 'Arsenios'. (Bad bad music, puddings from the 70's, and singing waiters = lots of embarrassed tourists robbed of a good night, and with substantially lighter pockets!)
We didn't like a lot of the suggestions, and if you're not overly into touristy gimicks, then you're probably best off giving this book a miss; follow your nose, buy a good walking map, use your imagination and you won't go wrong!
