Shirley Whitehead's popular series of walking articles for the "Madeira Times" are now brought together in pocket book format. Aimed at the leisure walker, Shirley's routes concentrate on the west of the island often overlooked by other walking writers. 25K map sections are adapted from the "Madeira Tour & Trail Super-Durable Map" for each walking route along with colour photos. This work is ideal for all visitors to Madeira wishing to explore the beautiful countryside of the Garden Island without the extreme routes that most writers include.

Review
DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK! What a little gem this book is. A good selection of walks, some not seen in other publications, with clear, concise directions and descriptions and good maps. There is extensive detail on local flora and buildings of interest. I love the Sunflower books but Shirley's is the ideal companion and a 'must have'. I look forward to using it for the first time very soon. P-R-D "Madeira mad" (Essex UK) Excellent Walking Guide to Madeira I bought this from amazon.co.uk and used it on a recent holiday to Madeira. We tried out three walks, not covered in any other books we've read and really enjoyed them. Shirley's directions and descriptions of the walks are great and took us to some places we would not have otherwise discovered. She also goes into interesting detail about the local plant life, history and places of interest. An excellent guide, which we'll be using again on our next trip. Ms. L. D. Sxxx

lovely walks, very pretty book
Shirley Whitehead's Madeira Walks arrived after I had returned from Madeira so I missed the new levada walks in the west of the island. Its a lovely book just the right size to be pocketable and informative for plants and history in addition to the walking.
If you are looking for a first book on Madeira suitable for casual walkers then this will open up some lovely western levada routes accessible by bus from Funchal. A couple of routes are duplicated with Walk Madeira, and other books, but as a starter for easy exploration of Madeira I would highly recommend this pocket sized guide.
If you are into more adventurous walking and gps navigation then you would opt for Walk Madeira but you should also buy this little gem.

Excellent guide for walking on Madeira
We have been visiting Madeira for years and have all the books and maps. This is a lovely pocket sized book. Shirley Whitehead really knows the island and describes the walks clearly. There were some routes here that were pleasant surprises to us - and we thought we knew the island pretty well.
We would say this was essential reading for Madeira visitors. It helped make our holiday.
