Manufacturer's Description

Jamie Oliver's Flavour Shaker will crush, grind, mix, puree, blend and release flavour from whole spices (including cinnamon stick and star anise), herbs, garlic, nuts, citrus rind or even lime or bay leaves. The secret of the Flavour Shaker is its little ceramic ball, which crushes, grinds, bruises and mixes the contents releasing all sorts of amazing smells and zingy flavours, while you are shaking it.

In just a few seconds you will see how easy it is to add flavour to all kinds of everyday dishes, such as meat rubs for really aromatic roasts and grills; marinades for deep down flavour; dips for tasty nibbles; oil dressing for salads, bakes or grills; fragrant sugars to finish off cakes and puddings … to name but a few tasty treats!

The Flavour Shaker is sized to give you just the right amount (you don’t need a lot) and you can pour it straight over your food. Ready to cook, ready to serve … get stuck in!

What Jamie says
The Flavour Shaker is a really fun way to add great flavour to your food. It’s quick. It's fresh. It's easy. This is going to transform your everyday meals into something fantastic—give it a go!'--Jamie Oliver

How to use

  • Step 1: Simply add your ingredients, then drop in the ceramic ball
  • Step 2: Screw the two halves together securely
  • Step 3: Give it a good shake, but look in to see how you're doing
  • Step 4: Open up and pour, scoop or run onto your food.

    Amazon.co.uk Review
If like me you enjoy cooking with freshly prepared ingredients but sometimes find it a bit of a hassle, then the Jamie Oliver Flavour Shaker is the product for you. In a nut shell it is a non-electrical device that crushes and grinds herbs and whole spices. Sound familiar? Well unlike a traditional pestle and mortar the Flavour Shaker is far more user-friendly and versatile.

At first glance the Flavour Shaker reminded me of one of those old-fashioned Russian Dolls--even to the point of splitting in 2 halves--but this kitchen tool is anything but old-fashioned with its ergonomic grip and tough polycarbonate body. Rattling around inside is a ceramic ball, the key feature of the Flavour Shaker: it is this that crushes and grinds your ingredients as you shake.

Using fresh herbs, spices in their seed form, garlic, chilies and other unprocessed ingredients make such a difference to everyday meals and the Flavour Shaker enables them to be prepared with ease. I was particularly impressed when I tried Garlic. Using a knife results in slices, a garlic crusher purees; the Flavour Shaker produces slices, pulp and juices—perfect! Curries using prepared whole spices from seeds are spectacular compared to using pre-ground from a jar. You get a fuller flavour as more of the oils are retained. The bottom half of the Flavour Shaker (the larger end) starts the crushing and the top end processes the contents more finely.

This product is easy to use, requires little effort, there are no spillages and you can see precisely how the contents are being processed. I salute you Jamie Oliver--the Flavour Shaker is a smart invention that fits perfectly within the surroundings of the 21st century kitchen and will intensify the tastes of the meals you cook within it.--Kate Copeland, Amazon.co.uk

    Serious Disappointment1
I am most disappointed with its performance. It is badly designed - can be assembled in four different orientations, so the comment about lining up the arrows is totally superfluous. Once assembled, I found that mine leaked when shaken vigourously. And boy, do you have to shake vigourously! Worse still, it is hopeless for crushing things like garlic and ginger. Might work for a few things, but does not do what it says on the tin. I think the tiny number of recipes is probably deliberate - that's all it does!

    good idea, badly executed!2
i bought one of these for my dad for christmas, first time he used it with liquid in it leaked everywhere, i tried it with the same result. its only been used a few times and one of the clips has developed a crack. can't see how this could be as a result of over tightening but overall not too impressed!
its a shame as its a neat idea but its a shame that it doesn't seem to live up to the hype!

    Fun while it lasted...1
We got given this pukka little gadget a couple of months back. It worked fine for salad dressings and marinades and was a great talking point for guests ("Twenty quid, for that?")

After no more a couple of dozen uses the inside of the join is all chipped away where the ceramic ball hits against the thin plastic. Can't risk using it any more cos it leaks and you get plastic pieces in the mixture, so now it's just an ornament.

The ceramic ball's still intact though if anyone needs one.
