Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review
Shania Twain was always going to have trouble topping Come on Over. After all, selling 34 million copies, it was the most successful album ever by a solo female artist. So this time she's really thinking big: Up! comes as a double-CD, CD1 being a 19-track "pop" album and CD2 containing "world music" versions of the same songs ("country" versions are available free on her official Web site). All of Shania's trademarks are here once more: the positivism, the feminist self-empowerment, the comic put-downs, the yearning love songs. And there's all the trademarks of her husband/producer Mutt Lange, too: the staccato Foreigner keyboards, the chugging Cars guitar, the Def Leppard stomp.
With the Langes now residing in Switzerland, the "pop" version has an evident European bent. Check out the Spanish-stylings of "Juanita", the German cabaret feel of "Ka-Ching!", the Roxette-touched title track and "C'est La Vie", which sounds like Abba performing "Manic Monday". The "world music" version, meanwhile, introduces Carib clatterings and sweeping disco effects that often seem cheesy and inappropriate. Nashville purists will, naturally, weep into their bourbon, but then don't they always? The "pop" version of Up! will surely be another colossal success. --Dominic Wills

The only way is "Up!" for Shania Twain
If you are a fan of Shania's debut album, "Come on over" and are considering buying "Up!", be prepared for a refreshing (but not dramatic) change of direction. The tracks featured on this album are slightly more pop and rock influenced than her usual modern country, but that is by no means a bad thing. On the contrary, Shania has an amazing voice that is suited to virtually every genre of music, and she proves that on this album.
The first thing you'll notice about "Up!" that makes it so different to its predecessor is that it is a double-CD album. I was curious and impressed when I discovered that the second CD contains "world" mixes of the "pop" tracks on the first CD, and this fact sets Shania apart from anyone in the music industry; I don't think any other artist has put this much effort into presenting their music to the world! There are also "country" versions of the songs, but they are only featured on the American/Canadian version of the album. I would have perhaps liked this version better than the International version I own, as the world mixes are probably less appealing to the British market than the country mixes. That said, the world mixes are very different from the pop versions and are quite refreshing to listen to, their Indian instruments and rhythmic beats providing a change for you if you are bored of listening to the first CD. (Not that that will happen, of course!)
The pop CD is by far the highlight of "Up!", though; an astounding nineteen superb tracks with no "fillers" thrown in just for the sake of filling time, which is a real plus sign for any album. The sheer brilliance of Shania's songwriting, together with her incredible voice and beautiful backing music, just blows me away. There is a lot of variety on this CD, the main attraction being Shania's trademark "girl power" lyrics against soft electric guitars and her ever-present string arrangements, which are breathtaking in themselves. The first track, "Up!", is a prime example of how rock-inspired this album is; the guitars are very prominent, but not so obvious that it moves away from the pop genre. Other tracks like this include "I'm gonna getcha good!", "What a way to wanna be!" and "In my car (I'll be the driver)", all of which are pulled off to perfection by Shania. There is a lovely Spanish feel to "Juanita", and this track encourages women to find their inner selves, so to speak. A truckload of gorgeous ballads are also included here, such as "Forever and for always", "It only hurts when I'm breathing", "When you kiss me", "I ain't goin' down" and the simply stunning "I'm jealous", my personal favourite from this album. This song really shows the strength and range of Shania's voice, and there are beautiful piano instrumentals complimenting her as she sings. Yet more styles of music are reflected in "Ka-ching!" and "Thank you baby!", certainly the two poppiest tracks of the lot. Both feature the breathtaking string arrangements that were included in most of the songs on "Come on over", and were great single choices from "Up!". By far the best lyrics are that of "She's not just a pretty face", which tells the story of a woman who does absolutely everything with her life: "She hosts a TV show, she rides the rodeo, she plays the bass in a band".
In my opinion, "Up!" is even better than "Come on over", although many people will disagree as "Come on over" is the biggest selling album ever by a female solo artist, and rightly so. However, I am pleasantly amazed that Shania has managed to produce such a fantastic and versatile comeback album. "Up!" is a must for any pop fan, or any music fan for that matter.
Uplifting
Let's face it, Shania was always bound for pop, and why not. Her first country albums were good, the originally released Come on Over had the country sound and was pop-ified for the rest of Europe eventually. She has the voice, the look and John "Mutt" Lange, how could she go wrong? This album is bursting with great songs, a good mix of ballads and feisty, feel-good songs. Sure enough, the lyrics don't take themselves seriously, this album is mainly about fun."Gonna Getcha Good" is a brilliant first single, it's sexy, it's catchy, it's danceable. "Up","I'm not in the mood to say no""C'est la vie"(very Abba!)"Nah!"What a way to be""In my Car" are examples of girl-power cheer-up crackers. And I can't help but love "Waiter, bring me water"'s wink at Def Leppard.
However, happy as I am with"Up",I'm severely disappointed that Europe didn't get the country "green" CD -there are many people who love country and have enjoyed Shania's first albums. Why are we landed with this diabolical Bollywood "blue" CD? I've had to order a second copy from the States, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
But with so many fantastic songs, all is forgiven. A definite must-buy.
The only way is UP
Having enjoyed the predeccessing 'Come On Over' so much, I was worried that Up! would be an inferior record, crammed - and at 19 songs, it is crammed - with fillers. I was wrong.
This is one of those CDs where you can just push play and listen from start to finish without getting bored. Shania melds the rocky, trendy sound of pilot single 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good' with Mexican beats in Juanita, while songs such as 'Nah!' and 'Cest La Vie' retain the countrified pop feel of Come On Over. There are some cracking ballads, such as 'It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing', and coming from someone like me who normally despises balladry, that's high praise!
Most interesting on this album is its format. In a way, it's a shame that the GREEN mixes weren't included, because although the RED CD does sound much more trendy and appealing than the softer, more spangly country sound of Come On Over and presumably the GREEN CDm it does seem to me that many of the individual traits and quirks of Shania's music have been ironed out. Having heard the much more diverse, jolly sound of the GREEN 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good,' I can see that in a small way, we've missed out by not having it.
I read all sorts of reviews condemning the BLUE CD but decided to go in with an open mind. However, in this case, you don't get what you pay for. Shania claims that the BLUE CD is to 'appeal to my fans across the globe'. If this was the case, one would assume that there would be a vast range of different musical styles. 'Juanita' could have been softer and more sensual with a lilting Spanish guitar. 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good' could have been given a Swedish makeover and emerged more funky and slick. Shania could have done so much with the BLUE CD had she been more diverse. Unfortunately, the songs are exclusively given an Indian spin, which, instead of being an addition to the songs, completely engulfs them in noisy drumbeats and wailing noises.
What might have been the highlight of Up! ends up as a mess of Bollywood B-sides.
Nevertheless, you have the RED album, which I can assure you is the one you'll listen to the most, and while it's not quite a match for Come On Over, I can tell you, it's a damn good shot across the bow. Fans of 'Come On Over,' hesistate no more!
