Excellent...if you're committed
This book is a most useful, comprehensive manual of Chinese grammar. What strikes me as particularly useful is the use of traditional characters alongside simplified characters throughout. It does do the book justice by going back and having a look at things again once you've covered them, as the book does move rather fast, and can get fairly heavy at times. For those looking for a book that is immediately accessible, this is not it, for those who can cope with grammar in english and other modern foreign languages, it should be somewhat rewarding. It boosted my level of chinese immensely - not neccessarily having the vocab to fill in the gaps. Plus, plenty of exercises to keep it ticking over!
The best around!
This book has to be the best guide that i have found for Chinese Studies. It can be used by both Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, thus making it extremely accessable to learners ad it's fairly simple to use by yourself at home acting as a revision guide or help with homework issues when your not at school.
The book runs through a large range of extemely useful grammatical structures, some easy and sum hard and they all have examples which help you understand more clearly. What i also like is the fact that exercises are included so you can put all your learning to good use.
This book is a definate must for GCSE level (along with the Schuam's Chinese vocabulary) because it covers so much that you need to know. I also thing that there is some structures that go into A-level althought i haven't checked with my Chinese Teacher. Even so, this will still help you out during A-level when revising, especially for non-native speakers.
All in all i feel this guide is very helpful. After i use it to check up on things i always feel very confidant and put the skills to good use when writing essays. You must get it if your a dedicated Chinese student, but i would not advise it if you are working alone.
cheap and NOT cheerful
I had previously bought the schaums grammar for french and FOUND IT EXCELLENT; it went up to Uni standerd but was simple to read.
This is the opposite- it does not go above GCSE standerd, and is so full of specialist language words that you need a degree in linguistics just to understand it!
It only gives THREE measure words (a key point of chinese grammar) So whether you are a complete beginner, or doing A level, I would suggest buying the 'modern manderin grammar'.
It's bigger,(appears scarier) and more expensive, but its easy to use and understand even with no knowledge of chinese. After the grammar section there are some well known chinese idioms, a guide to culture, information about chinese letter writing etc.
