The basics of Slovak, the national language of Slovakia, are presented in situational lessons and a step-by-step format, from rudimentary to more complex grammar explanations. Beginner's Slovak is a valuable guide for classroom use and for individuals learning on their own.

Good introduction to the Slovak language - with some flaws
"Beginner's Slovak" begins with information and history about Slovakia, which some may find extraneous when the objective is to learn the language. However, there is reasonable coverage of grammar throughout, with a number of example conversations translated into English. The book does not contain any exercises - it is simply a case of "read and learn". There is a basic glossary of terms and useful expressions at the end, although a definitve list of common verbs is sorely missing. Overall, a worthwhile buy if the intention is to simply gain a basic knowledge of the language.
Slightly misleading
I think the term 'Beginners' is slightly misleading because without some basic grounding in Slovak this book could be difficult for someone who has no experience of the language.
You need a very good grasp of English grammar to understand some of the lessons.
The English/Slovak...Slovak/English vocabularly section is good as is the 'expressions' section but I think working with a CD first and learning more basic words and phrases would be helpful before progressing to this book.
