Does what it says!
There does not seem to be much available in the way of CDs for learning Danish and this one does do exactly what it says...a list of phrases and words said once in American English then twice in Danish.
The good bits:
- Low cost
- Gives a basic introduction to the sounds of the language
- Phrases and key words cover basic situations eg. introducing yourself, saying hello, foods, in the office etc
The negatives:
- The book is very small and in tiny print. It literally just lists all the phrases/words on the CD in Danish and English
- Phrases are said very fast given that it is aimed at complete beginners
- There is no breakdown of phrases into constituent parts or explanation of the language structure
I have seen much better audio based introductions to other languages with practice exercises and good print colour books. Overall it was ok but could be improved with a better accompanying book and more explanation of phrases.
Pirates of the Carribean....
From its blatantly photocopied cover in the CD casing to the scratched and skipping Cd's inside and finally the 'homemade' "Course book" this reeks of a bad copy.
There are 2 tracks per CD - approx 40min each disk (which is fine) but the fact that you have to listen to a 20 min track without break (ie you cant put a small managable section on repeat) - not good for driving etc.
The recording sounds like a guy fiddling around with two dictaphones (one American one Danish) to play back the conversation.
Shame as the content is pretty good.
In hindsight i probably wouldnt bother again.
Don't waste your money
I find that the product description for the "Perfect Recall" courses does not really give a very good representation of what you are buying. Firstly, if you wish to learn to speak and understand Danish, this is NOT for you. If you want a simple phrase book for a short trip, it may possibly be of some use, but I would not recommend it as a stand-alone product.
With Perfect Recall you can learn words and phrases parrot style, if you are prepared to spend hours and hours listening to your typical "where is the..." phrasebook style sentences. Even if you do manage to remember which one of the many phrases you want to use, unless your Danish conversant replies with an exact phrase from this course, you probably won't understand, because this course doesn't attempt to teach you the components of the phrases or what the individual words mean.
I was able to spot myself as a self-taught beginner to the Danish language, mistakes in the "Course Book" (which is just a cheap booklet that looks like it has been photocopied, and is pretty much just a script of the recording, offering very little other information) and the CDs have clearly just been recorded from couple of old tape cassettes. There are pops and skips in the recordings, so every now and then you might miss a chunk of a phrase, or your pause to repeat the phrase.
I would highly recommend that you don't waste your money on this product and instead spend it on something that will actually teach you to understand and speak Danish with confidence, such as the Pimsleur courses: Well thought out lessons, that build your knowledge gradually. Words are broken down into syllables, to make sure you pronounce them properly and new words are integrated slowly into sentences you already understand, rather than bombarding you constantly with new information.
On the positive side, if you already have some knowledge of Danish, and simply wish to improve your pronounciation and vocabulary, there are a lot of words and phrases covered here. However, if that is what I wanted, I would still prefer to give my money to a reputable language company, such as Berlitz or BBC, whose books don't include spelling mistakes!
Finally, if you have any doubts, as to whether this is for you, check out the reviews for the "Perfect Recall" brand in other languages for more opinions.
