Customer Reviews
At least there is nothing about postillions and lightning.
I keep searching amongst copious French, German and Spainsh software packages for Greek language resources. At last there is one. That is its main quality. It exisists and using it is fun.
This is a well designed package but with real weaknesses. It is excellent for some vocabulary but has all the limitations and idiosyncracy of the tourist phrasebook - so far I have never needed to ask for chopsticks in a taverna. Although it includes phrases as well as words, numbers and time there is no grammar or even basic useage of simple verbs so that learning can only be parrot fashion.
The design is great though. It is structured round language games with point scoring so that it becomes decidedly addictive. One of the most effective features is the recording facility so that you can repeat words and check your pronounciation. All your answers are confirmed by either a male or female figure saying "nai" (yes) or "oxhi" (no). I find the way the female says "nai, nai" quite erotic but perhaps that, as well as my love affair with Greece, is more to do with a mid-life crisis.
In short, use it with a course not instead of one and it can be useful.
Fair start, worth the money
I bought this CD to help bring my Ancient Greek up to the modern day. It is quite pleasantly presented, although obviously it is fairly low budget stuff. It doesn't teach you the letters or anything like grammar so it is a good idea to have a book to consult in parallel, but it does give you a reasonable basic vocabulary and gives you a good start in listening and speaking.
I had problems getting the software to run properly - apparently it is incompatible with the version of Pinnacle Studio I had on my PC (v.8). Their technical support is reasonably helpful, but I could only get the software to work after reinstalling Windows.
Now that it's working, it's a nice little package and I think worth what you pay for it. I will probably get the next in the series once I've completed this course.
Parrot-fashion learning
Like the previous reviewer I found this package to be quite weak. There is no guidance on alphabet, verbs, tenses etc. In other words - the basics (presumably) of the language. Yes, you can play learning games and repeat phrases to your heart's content but I suspect if you learn this way you are going to sound very strange to a Greek native.
If you're looking to work and live amongst the Greeks (as I hope to do) then look for a more comprehensive package.
Incidentally, the previous reviewer is right. The way the female presenter says "Yes" is very sexy !!
