Synopsis
For five years, Superman (Brandon Routh) has been away from Earth, coaxed into space by a belief that Krypton may still exist. Finding nothing, he comes back to a changed world--not only has terrorism become rampant, but Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has married, started a family, and won the Pulitzer for her piece 'Why the World Doesn't Need Superman'. After a stop in Smallville to see his adopted mother (Eva Marie Saint), Superman is back in Metropolis, and Clark Kent has his old job back at the Daily Planet, with everyone still incredibly oblivious to his alter ego. But where there's Superman, there's Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), and he is likely to be planning something dastardly--in this case, using a piece of pilfered kryptonite to grow an entirely new continent that he will control. Bryan Singer (X-MEN 1 and 2), armed with a script by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, approaches the red cape with reverence for the lore of the character, and respect for Richard Donner's SUPERMAN (1980) and Richard Lester's 1980 sequel, films that ushered in the era of the modern superhero film. Singer's SUPERMAN is filled with melancholy, and not so subtly suggests the notion of Superman as a Christ figure, sacrificing himself to save mankind. But there are still laughs, mostly courtesy of Spacey (clearly having a blast) and Parker Posey as his moll, Kitty Kowalski, as well as plenty of gasp-inducing set pieces, including a spectacular and terrifying near plane crash and a sinking boat. While modern visual effects have allowed Superman to reach entirely new realms, Singer keeps them from becoming the film's raison d'etre, thus keeping the Man of Steel's gigantic heart intact--heavy though it may be.

'Superman Soars'5
Have just watched this on my PS3...What can I say! Don't listen to any critics, especially those who havn't seen. Because 'seeing' IS believing!! This is a truly superlative movie. from a Director at the height of his powers, one who is only beging to tap into his creative potential. The casting is superb. Kate Bosworth, an inspired choice for Lois Lane & Kevin Spacey adding another dimension to the dark side of megolomaniac Lex Luthor, but its Brandon Routh who breathes new life into a role he was surely born to play. He convinces totally as both Clark Kent & his alter-ego: Superman. this is a movie made with..LOVE! Bryan Singer knows his subject and his direction is flawless...
The blu-ray transfer is impeccable at 1080i & is richly detailed & textured. You really will believe a man can fly! Even the most dramatic sequences are pin sharp & boast unrivalled picture clarity. The colour palette is vibrant & real. The 5.1. DD sound mix is also outstanding & the musical score fantastic & also pays respectful homage to its predecssors. Sounds are placed pricecely & accurately with perfect base & resonance that truly will test your subwoofer!
I can't recommend this movie enough. If you love film, this has to be in your collection. If you own a blu-ray player or a wonderful Playstation 3 then this will demonstrate just what blu-ray can do...

Buy this today. Its a truly worthwhile cinematic experience. Can't wait till the next adventure in 2009...!

The quality and the film itself!5
Right, first of all, as soon as you put this disc in you see superman's planet get distroyed, a bit of a flashback, the way that this is redone is brilliant, quality is 100% and crisp, the Red sun's quality is unbelievable. THE WHOLE MOVIE is Entirely Crisp!! This is the type of Blu-Ray which you should get as it includes special effects so you can really get the most out of blu-ray. High Recommendation and a great film!!

Should you double dip? Yes you should!5
Superman Returns has to be one of the most under-appreciated films of recent years.

While some may criticise elements of the story or the characterisation of some characters or even the leisurely pace of the film NOBODY can deny that Superman Returns is a visually sumptuous and thrilling work of cinema. (By the way those who thought that there wasn't enough action in the film or that we didn't see enough of Superman's powers must have missed the part where Superman throws a small CONTINENT into space).

This BD version really does blow the DVD version out of the water. The gorgeous palette is superbly presented here in all its subtleties with Superman's costume looking particularly rich and vivid. The blacks are far richer and deeper without a trace of grain (which is good considering this film has quite a few pivotal space / night sequences.

Sound is also sublime and while I haven't got the best surround sound setup I did notice a marked improvement in clarity and texture of the sound as opposed to the DVD version.

I bought this film as part of the amazing 13 disc Superman Collector's Tin and have found this a more than worthy double dip. If you're half the Superman fan that I am, then you will too!
