Fantastic Piece of Kit
I bought one of these last week and I am very impressed with its sound quality and features. It didn't take long to set up at all and, as I have a Bravia TV, the TV did a lot of the work for me. Once the unit is set up and the speakers are in place, you use the special mic (supplied, with very long lead) to calibrate your speakers to where you sit. It's a very simple process and sounds pretty cool too. Once it's done, that's about it, though if you have a Bravia TV with Bravia Sync you might want to play with the settings on your TV. You can pretty much ditch one of your remotes by using Bravia Sync, which is cool and helps justify the cost to my wife.
The sound quality is excellent and significantly better than the last surround system I have which was one of the cheaper built-in DVD player units. If you have a very large room then this may be slightly too weak but in my average size living room I only managed to get the volume up half-way before the windows vibrated like they were going to blow out. It's a very crisp and even sound, with an incredible bass that doesn't sound overpowered and is very smooth. Listening to music on this thing is a joy and you can hear parts of songs that just aren't audible on cheaper equipment. You can choose to listen to everything in it's original format, which means DVDs/Blu-rays in full 5.1 and CDs/MP3s in stereo, or you can enhance stereo signals and add surround effects to your music. It's a personal choice what you go for, but the options are there. For films, especially Blu-ray, it is just fantastic. The 5.1 soundtracks sound like they were meant to be heard on this thing. The opening sequence of The Dark Knight is stunning; the voices sound like they are in the room and everything else sounds incredibly realistic. Matched with a high-quality LCD/plasma TV, 'home cinema' becomes almost as close to reality as you can get.
It hooks up to almost any modern AV equipement. I've got it attached to a Playstation 3 but you could just as easily attach it to Sky+/SkyHD, Xbox360, DVD player, computer etc. There are 3 HDMI inputs, 2 optical and 1 coaxial, which is enough for almost any enthusiast. There are 4 main speakers, a rather large glossy black subwoofer and 1 slim front speaker. It also comes with an FM aerial for high-quality (but not digital) radio.
The speakers are attached to 'easy-fit' plugs which are colour coded and plug into the back of the unit. This is good in a way because it makes it very simple to set up but it also makes life more difficult if the wires aren't long enough for your needs (which happens to me every time). Fortunately, the other end of the speaker wire is just plain open-ended speaker wire so it's quite easy to extend them. Just go to Maplin (or eBay), get some speaker cable, connect it to speaker wire and use either black tape or heat-shrink rubber to hold them together. Although this is quite a pain, it's worth doing as you can then use speaker cable as long as you like but also you can use whatever colour cable you like, as the grey cable supplied isn't that good against my magnolia walls (as my wife, with her eagle-eyed vision, spotted immediately).
Overall, I am very happy with this product. I highly recommend it for tech enthusiasts who are not totally obsessive or fabulously wealthy (if you're one of these people you'd be better off spending a couple of grand on seperates) but can't cope with tinny TV speakers or are looking for an upgrade from a built-in DVD surround system that doesn't have enough inputs. I like the slimline appearance, which doesn't look chunky but also still manages to avoid looking cheap. The sound quality is fantastic, the features are excellent, the design is superb and the only thing I can find wrong with it is the speaker cable (and you can fix that yourself). If you have a Bravia TV with Bravia Sync, then there's double the reason for you to get one. Even if you don't, you'll find little to fault with this.
excellent upgrade
Bought as an upgrade to older version. sound quality for this price point is excellent. set up very easy, and works brilliant with sky HD and the PS3. looks brilliant with the matching Sony BDPS360. Highly recommended.
Super Sound
