Product Description

In this his latest book for Ian Allan Publishing, Malcolm Keely records the history of Birmingham City Transport from its earliest days through to 1969 when WMPTE took over its operations. Through a combination of detailed text, black & white and colour photographs and a selection of memorabilia - including tickets and other ephemera - the author provides an absorbing account of the life and times of one of Britian's most important municipal operators.

Malcolm Keeley was co-author of the splendid 'Birmingham City Transport', published by TPC at the fag-end of the 1970s (and still available second-hand through Amazon, I think).

While this little book is nowhere near as comprehensive in its coverage, it does have something that its predecessor lacked. Namely, pages and pages of colour, mostly shots of working vehicles taken by the author himself.

Unlike many transport titles, it's well written, too. Mr Keeley has his own 'voice' and would rather tell a story than grind an axe.

In any case, it's too late to repeal the 1968 Transport Act. So crack open a bottle of Davvy's (provided you're over 18, that is), stick on a 'Move' compilation CD, sit back and enjoy. We'll never see days like these again.

This book, as commented on by another reviewer, is an excellent, if somewhat belated, follow up to the 1978 offering, "Birmingham City Buses". What it lacks slightly in written matter compared to the former, it makes up for in really superb photographs from the very early days right through to to the Merger in the late sixties. The pictures, many in full colour are accompanied by Malcolm Keeley's excellent knowledge and insight into the operation of the undertaking.

The author has a true understanding of his subject and ensures few, if any, errors appear in his books, which is not always the case!
