The indispensible guide to the very best that Scotland has to offer. Scotland the Best! was first published in 1993. Since then its reputation has grown as the guide to all the very best Scotland has to offer. It has been widely praised in reviews, by awards from the Tourist industry and, above all, by delighted readers from all over the world. This is the guide to help you experience all that is excellent about Scotland. Whether you live here or are visiting, why settle for the second-rate when you can be guided to so much that is superb? Peter Irvine's personal guide provides thousands of recommendations covering a multitude of topics including the best places to stay (whatever your budget), the best beaches, the best ice-cream, the best hill walks, the best bakers, the best spooky places, the best seafood, the best places for kids, the best ceildhs, and so the list goes on. This new edition will be the best ever. Peter Irvine has reassessed every recommendation to see whether it is still worthy of inclusion so ensuring that the book continues to live up to its name and newly discovered gems have been added to all the existing categories. However well you know Scotland, Peter Irvine will guide you to something excitingly new. The debate about the current state of tourism in Scotland has become a major political topic. The need for Scotland to provide a quality service to visitors has never been stronger or more widely recognized. It is an ideal time to bring out a new edition of the only guide whose purpose is just to provide 'the best'.

Review
'The only guide worth a damn' The Scotsman 'Infallible and quite brilliant' Daily Telegraph 'Makes all other guides to Scotland redundant' The Sunday Times 'Apart from a clever structure and the highest journalistic standards, this book is a joy. The clever thing about such opinionated copy is that pretty soon one picks up the character of the writer, and thus can get a much more accurate and tactile impression of a place than from so-called even handed reports. This book can only enhance the pleasure of visiting or living in Scotland' Amazon 'The plain truth is that this book does not put foot wrong: every one of the places that I have visited on Mr Irvine's recommendation has lived up to or exceeded its billing' Amazon

New edition keeps up the standard
It's a measure of a good guide book that the natives of the places under review recognise their own haunts. Great book, I keep it in the car for spur of the moment trips North.
The best guide to Scotland I've read
As a native Scot I have used this book frequently to the extent that it is now falling to pieces! Not only are the recommendations for hotels, restaurants, walks, beaches, historical places, waterfalls etc etc consistently good, they are well laid out and easy to access. I use this book as a guide when I want (eg)a restaurant to eat in, but I also love to peruse it as a reading book, inspiring me to visit new places and take detours off my regular routes.
I would highly recommend this book to locals and tourists alike. Buy it well in advance and use it to plan your visits. If you are a foody you'll get hungry reading the descriptions of restaurants and if you've never been here before the 'tick' rating system will help you decide upon the best things to do.
