Product Description

THIS new edition of Images of the Medway Towns brings the story of the area right up to date. The book retains its coverage of landmark periods over the last century, such as the Second World War and scenes of Chatham Dockyard as a thriving naval base. But it also has an entirely new chapter, documenting the changes of the 1980s and 90s and right into the new Millennium These include the development of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and the A2/M2 widening, the devastating closure of Chatham Dockyard in 1984 and the effects of the Falklands conflict and 1991 Gulf War. We also show the havoc wreaked by the 1987 Great Storm and the turn in fortunes of our area's football club, Gillingham FC, with the heartache of the cruel knock-out in the 1999 Wembley play-offs wiped out by the triumphant win into the First Division the following year. With some of the events in the last chapter from less than a decade ago just around the corner of our minds, the memories are still vivid and fresh for people of all ages. Meanwhile, the earlier chapters will again remind older generations of how things were, and what has gone forever, while the young will get an insight into life as once lived by their parents and grandparents.
