Average customer review:Product Description
First published over 40 years ago, Ocean Ships has become the bible for maritime enthusiasts, providing authoritative and detailed information on all the world's ocean-going passenger and cargo ships. The total number of ships in the last edition (published in 2006) was over 5,000 and such has been the boom in ship building in recent years with the growth in the international cruise business as well as the amount of cargo that needs to be shipped around the world that the total of new ships has grown substantially while many older ships are being scrapped. Ships listed in the new edition range from the greatest names in the cruise business such as Cunard's Queen Mary 2 and the recently launched Queen Victoria, to the multitude of unglamorous workhorses of the seas - tankers, container ships and cargo vessels owned by companies across the globe. The new edition will be fully revised, with entries organized by shipping company with a listing of each ship owned by the company giving details of company colours, national flag, year built, tonnage, dimensions, speed, engines, number of passengers, type and former names, supplemented with a new photographic section of around 200 new photographs.

Another good edition of Ocean Ships
This is about the 6th edition of Ocean Ships I've bought. If you are interested in large world-wide shipping this book is well worth buying. It has lots of good photos, good data, good quality paper & well bound. The ships are listed by company name & there is an index of ships at the back. I realise that there are so many ships that a large number have to be omitted but I find it frustrating when I cannot find listed a ship that I have just seen, even though I have just bought the latest edition! I would prefer it if the omitted ships were the older ones - say over 20 yrs old (as they will be the first to be scrapped) & the smaller ones. Then hopefully room could be found for the major new ships which are sometimes omitted. Also, there are some modern & sizeable ships owned by a company which may have a small fleet which are omitted for that reason - I think they should be included because of their significance. Apart from those criticisms, I am very pleased with the latest edition & I dare say I shall continue to buy the latest editions in the future. It is a must for ship spotters, second only to Jane's Merchant Ships I would say (and that has none of the photos that this book has and is many times the price!).
Ocean Ships
An excellent book, showing all the complexities of the shipping companies and management systems. The previous names of the ships are shown, which is very useful for research, and the cruise ships section makes the book worth while in itself.
Ocean Ships, 2009
Ocean Ships, 2009 continues David Hornsby's high standard of meticulous research and record-keeping. The only available regularly updated work of reference on Merchant Shipping available to those many people who can not afford a copy of the Lloyds Register. Excellent value!
