Customer Reviews

Probably should be a classic4
This book deals with the more "rustic" version of the classic Windsor chair, and argues, probably correctly, that the Welsh chair came first. It shows a few pictures of Windsor chairs for comparison and to show how the Windsor chair probably developed from the Welsh, but concentrates entirely on the Welsh stick backed chair.

An interesting history section, and comparisons of the various styles of Welsh chair shows the authors deep love of the classic simplicity and elegance of this type of chair.

The step-by-step, how-to- section doesn't give massively detailed information on "how-to", but gives very good clear photographs of each stage, and allows each craftsman to choose his own preferred method. Some of the important dimensions are given, the rest is up to the maker, and materials are discussed. The section on bending the arms is very good.

Although there are no plans, there is enough information in the book to design and make your own Welsh or even Windsor chair, if you already have some woodworking experience.

The author's sense of humour, and pride in all things Welsh is very apparent, and some of his sweeping statements should be taken with a pinch of salt - but the craftsman's love of his craft stops these comments being annoying or misleading.

I have made A Welsh chair, and two Welsh chair-style stools from the information in this book. It's great, and I recommend it.....And I'm English!

If it had a set of plans I'd give it a 5 star rating, but then that kind of goes against the whole thing with Welsh chairs.
