Customer Reviews

A elephants lover must buy5
I received this book for Christmas as a present, want a excellent book fantastic photograph's and pictures. It captures elephants doing want they do best walking, eating and posing. A must buy for elephant lovers everywhere.

Stunning5
This book celebrates all aspects of the elephant. Steve Bloom has gone to extraordinary lengths to photograph elephants in all sorts of situations, often taking great risks such as swimming underneath them to get spectacular photographs. This book is filled with stunning photography, showing the real world of the elephant today. His moving, emotional text compliments the pictures.

Pleasing on the Eye3
This book is the culmination of 12 years photographing elephants in the wild. It is a photographic portfolio of the species and provides the reader with images of elephants in all scenarios. The book is hugely image dominated which means it can easily be appreciated and finished within a couple of hours.

However despite the quality of the photography and the variety in backdrop and photographic techniques there is in fact very little behaviour involved and this makes many of the pictures rather repetitive. The photos are briefly captioned and are at the back of the book, which is annoying and tiring over the course of 167 photos!

It is a large, hefty book, which is necessary for the images but makes it awkward to travel with. The limited text is passionate and moving but in fact teaches you very little about elephants. This, along with the photography gives the impression that this book is concerned with appreciating the aesthetic and emotional beauty of the animals rather than demonstrating the ecology of the species.

Some people will want to view the photos again and again, but being a practical rather than aesthetic nature lover I would have preferred a more informative approach.

Steve Bloom's Spirit of the Wildis a more gripping showcase due to the variety of species featured.
