For many years the Algarve has not been considered as a 'real' walking destination. That opinion is rapidly changing. An increasing number of people are beginning to realise that there is far more to this area than first meets the eye - besides a spectacular and dramatic coastline, there is a huge interior that sees very few visitors. Here the varied geology helps produce a rich range of scenery from volcanic hills to dramatic limestone escarpments. This diversity is complemented by the local flora and fauna that flourish in the equable climate of mild, sunny winters and long, hot summers. All this, combined with a local population that is warm and generous, makes walking here fascinating. The walks in this guide will take you right away from the large tourist developments so that you too can discover the huge welcoming heart of the Algarve.

About the Author
Julie Statham has lived in the Algarve since 1998 moving there from France where she was an active walk leader for four years. Originally from the UK she has an Earth Sciences degree from the Open University and a degree and doctorate in Geology from Bristol University; today she is especially interested in conservation and environmental protection. Since moving to the Algarve, walking has become her life and she now has her own walking company 'Portugal Walks' which offers walking holidays through out the country. Julie is passionate about the potential of the Algarve for walking and is constantly seeking new paths and trails - "it's an obsession". Besides her walking company she also runs a walking club for residents which meets every fortnight and raises money for charity. To relax Julie likes to sample good Portuguese wine - preferably red!
Customer Reviews
A great way to visit
Having given up on walking the west coast from South to North (the south was covered in tracks and then as you go further north the vegetation becomes too dense), we used this guide to discover some fantastic landscapes.
In a few places the tracks have changed and sometimes the guide could be more precise, for example: not clear if the house you pass on your left is before or after you turn off.
