Fearless Firefighters!
A slightly unattractive firetruck that makes up for its awkward appearance with some good features and functions.
This 2005 model represents something of a transitional phase for Lego design. You can see them moving away from the specialised bricks that effectively build the set for you, but there is a preponderance to use a lot of bulky parts (for simplistic building) to hamper what could have been a superb set.
The cab of the tender is the traditional one mini-figure affair. This would be fine except it leaves your other fire fighter rather left behind or sat riding in the dingy! Despite this oversight, there is an abundance of other features that help get past this. The cab has the traditional axe and radio storage points, as well as some nice 'shuttered' panels that lift to reveal a crate carrying respirators and a fire extinguisher.
The back of the truck is where it all goes a bit wrong, unfortunately. the swivelling ladder assembly is nothing new, but past models have carried it off with a lot more subtlety and flair than here. The large rotating block would be more at home on a crane than a fire truck. It wouldn't look so bad if werent for the piddly extending ladder thats placed on top. This looks like it should have a more substantial mechanism here, rather than an extending 'steel' ladder. The cherry picker basket also looks a bit top heavy on end of the ladder. still, its livened up with a further storage point and the usual hose reel.
The trailer is also a strange beast, being an incredibly bulky affair for just towing a dingy! The dingy itself is a nice addition, and has a fair amount of detail with an outboard motor, lights and steering as well as a life jacket.
Overall, a bit of mixed bag that rewards and punishes in equal fashion and just about wins through thanks to some good play features and charming minifigures. Whilst not an essential purchase from the City range, this will nevertheless be a good addition to the fleet of Lego City Fire Department.
Grandson delighted.
Grandson delighted with the Fire Truck together with its add-ons. Goes very well with his other Lego creations.
Lego City 7239 Fire Truck
Bought this for my 5 year old. He really enjoys working through the instructions to build the toys (I enjoy helping him to build things just as much!), spends hours playing with the trucks. Lego is timeless, a toy they never get bored of.
