excellent... quite simply..
This book probably did more to expand my reading on the conflict than any other. As a "limey" who previously only read about the battles and leaders i can say that this book opened my eyes and understanding of the issues. Thanks to Mr Stampp my own library is now expanding considerably!

I hope that Mr Stampp will not be offended if I describe the book as an excellent primer on the subject.. simply written and without bias.. a book i would recommend to all new students to the subject..

Simply a must for anyone writing a paper on the American Civil war
I really cannot recommend this enough. It is a treasure trove of leading historians work (made up in the most of large extracts from their publishings)all referenced and dated. It also includes first hand evidence which is incredibly useful and again, well documented with dates included.
Stampp has written informative summaries of the subject areas before each chapter, which are arranged to group together all the major factors in the causes of the conflict. Arguments are balanced and give a broad scope of information and opinion.

If you're writing an essay on the civil war, don't bother buying a load of books, buy this one first.
