Later Seleucid
Alexander's generals (the Diadochi) jostled for supremacy over parts of his empire at his death Seleucus gained Babylonia, and continued to expand his dominions ruthlessly to create a great empire encompasssing much of Asia Minor, under the control of a superb professional army combining the best of Greek, Persian and Eastern forces - elephants, pikemen and elite noble cavalry. Wars with Rome, Parthia and also many civil wars proved that the empire was however ultimately too large to control, and by 100 BC encompassed little more than Antioch and some Syrian cities.
