Synopsis
There are two irreconcilable views regarding the age of the earth. The evolutionist requires the earth to be around 4,600 million years old, whilst the creationist argues for a young earth of just a few thousand years. What does the Bible say on this fundamental issue and how do we relate this to the scientific evidence? Dr. Monty White, a popular creationist writer and speaker, shows there is no contradiction between the Bible and science, and clearly explains the Biblical arguments and scientific evidence for a young earth.

Much younger than you may think!5
This is a fine, concise book. Some of the popular, contemporary, scientific theories point to an old earth of 4, 600 million years old. However, this book sets out to prove (quite convincingly) that the earth is much younger than some may believe - i.e. less than 20, 000 years old!
The main points of the book are divided into two sections:

1. Biblical considerations. These include an examination of the genealogies in Genesis, the length of the creation days (i.e. were the first six days really just 24 hour periods?), and the weaknesses of the so-called Gap Theory (i.e. was there a time period between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2? What problems arise with this view?) The author then explains why the earth may appear to be older: owing to a superficial appearance of age. That is, God created a 'mature' creation- making mountains and valleys, which naturally take thousands of years to form (pp. 45-49).

2. Scientific considerations. In the second section of the book, it is clear that the author has thoroughly researched his subject matter, although this section is much more technical and complicated. The author goes on to examine different dating methods, which are often used to determine the age of rocks and minerals in the earth. These methods include carbon dating. The author shows that such methods are not without their problems, however, and in no way, give conclusive proof of an earth many millions of years old. Personally, I found a section entitled 'the light problem' to be most interesting.
How can light from stars which are more than 20,000 light years away, reach the earth, if the earth is less than 20, 000 years old? The author presents different theories, disproving some of them. He then gives two possible explanations: 1. that light can take 'short cuts' as it travels; 2. there is evidence that many years ago, the speed of light was faster. (Both these points are shown clearly by some helpful tables).

The author then concludes with an overview of the different points covered in the book. This is helpful in simplifying the more scientific section of the book. Also, he exposes the weaknesses of the theory of evolution. It is widely accepted that evolution needs lots of time. Therefore, if the earth is younger than many commonly believe, then there would have been no time for evolution to occur. The author then points us to the true Creator of the earth - the Lord God Almighty. he shows us that we can be right with Him by repenting of sin, and trusting in God's Son - the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

This is a well researched and very helpful book. It deals with many important issues and answers several key questions regarding the age of the earth.
