Universal Rain Trap
You need to purchase a device to attach a water butt to a down pipe as the majority of water butts do not include this in the package. This is fitted to your down pipe and it collects the rainwater and fills the butt and, as long as this is fitted at the correct height, stops collecting water once the butt is full, with any excess diverting back to the down pipe and your soakaway.

Fitting is described as easy; that depends on your DIY skills. You need to cut through the downpipe to fit the rain trap and ensure you cut at the right height. I got a builder to do this for me. I found that some minor tweaking to the height was necessary to get the best flow of water into the butt; even a fraction of an inch movement made a huge difference to the flow into the butt, but be prepared to get soaked as I found I only managed to achieve this tweak when it was pouring with rain...

One tip - disconnect the rain trap in the Spring and empty out the accumulated water - it will probably be full of silt, which will impede the flow of water into the butt when you need it the most.
