Amazon.co.uk Review
Superbad, for many, was the surprise hit of the year. Yet when you consider the comedy pedigree sitting behind the camera, perhaps it’s not that much of a turn up. Director Greg Mottola, for instance, cut his teeth on episodes of Arrested Development and the underrated US show Undeclared. Co-writer Evan Goldberg has credits on the US Ali G show, while his partner in scribe is Seth Rogen, star of 2007’s other breakout comedy, Knocked Up. And with that film’s director, Judd Apatow, also on the production team, it’s understandable to see where Superbad gets its quality from.
Yet in spite of all of these names behind the camera, Superbad is powered by Jonah Hill, previously seen in mainly supporting roles, as the foul-mothed Seth. In conjunction with Michael Cera’s Evan, he bursts his way through a film that sees the pair of them trying to buy booze to go to a girl-filled party, before they go their separate ways to college.
Hill and Cera are strong in their lead roles, and keep Superbad motoring even through its quieter moments. But the scene stealer has to be Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell, or--courtesy of his fake ID--McLovin. When he encounters two cops, played by Rogen and Bill Hader, comedy gold swiftly ensues.
Superbad isn’t as consistently funny as Knocked Up, and its running time may outstay its welcome a little, but it’s still a tough film to knock. It’s simple and straightforward aim, to sit on your screen and generate plenty of laughs, is comfortably achieved, and its rewatch value is high as well. Well worth a look. --Simon Brew

Synopsis
Produced by Judd Apatow and co-written by Seth Rogen--both of THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP fame--SUPERBAD is the story of two horny teenage geeks looking to lose their virginity before college. Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) are hoping to end high school on a high note, and when one of their crushes (Emma Stone) invites them to a graduation party, the boys are ecstatic. That is, until they become responsible for supplying the party with alcohol. They hurriedly concoct a scheme to use their friend Fogell's (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) horrendously fake ID, but trouble soon arises when Fogell becomes the victim of a liquor store robbery. The cops (Rogen and Bill Hader) show up, and the evening quickly disintegrates into a hilarious mess of misunderstandings, sing-alongs, and beer mixed with laundry detergent.
Hill is a riot as the wild-haired and foul-mouthed Seth, and Mintz-Plasse is great fun as the uber-geek Fogell. But Michael Cera (formerly of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) steals the show as the sensitive and level-headed Evan. His oddball line delivery and excellent comic timing make for some of the most bizarre but best moments of the film. Yet, despite gross-out jokes, SUPERBAD somehow manages to fly far above frat-boy, AMERICAN PIE-style humour. This is partly due to the comedic skill of the actors, but also because the characters--silly and absurd though they can be--are so well-written. Watching these bungling outcasts is a vivid reminder of the horrific lows and supreme highs of high school life, and their antics rather poignantly capture how age 18 can indeed be super bad, but also super good.

Funniest Movie I've Ever Seen ! 5 stars without a doubt
This movie is THE funniest film i have ever seen ! but you need to have the right sense to humour to appriciate its briliance, so if your a very serious person who gets offended easily don't watch this. anyway, yes this film is hilarious it had me and my friend on the floor crying with laugher, i rate 5 stars it was great fun to watch and put me in a great mood
"Have you actually ever met anyone named McLovin?"
Since Napoleon Dynamite, `geek flicks' became nearly as trendy as the awful teen sex comedies like American Pie - and when I saw the opening credits with the awkward dancing, I thought this might be jumping on the bandwagon. Thankfully though - the film introduced two great characters - Evan and Seth. The two friends are in the final throws of school life before going up to college, and their quest for booze for booze for a party leads to journey of discovery that will test their friendship to the limits.
There's great banter between the two and the actors (Michael Cera and Jonah Hill) impress with their heart warming pathos. We then get Fogell, a.k.a McLovin; the uber-geek who ends up travelling with two policemen - one of whom looks like a young Dan Ackroyd. This gives us three characters who are at the centre of humour for the film and all three are incredibly likable - and though they are often crude (especially Seth), there's a charm to them and a feeling that they are genuinely part of lifes `good guys'.
Still though, Hollywood isn't usually in the business of making films for arts sake - and when it comes to getting the punters through the cinema doors then nothing sells quite so well as a few teens trying to get laid. The truth is that you can't but feel that the jokes have all been done before and that they're all based on the same template as American Pie, Road Trip, et al. But the main three characters (along with the policeman) are far more developed than what you normally get with a teen comedy and they make the film.
In a nutshell: I've watched so many comedies over the last few years and tittered mildly at the 'whacky' and 'crazy' antics of the two-dimensional teen characters (played by actors in their mid to late twenties!) as they spend their time on screen getting up to 'outrageous' high-jinx, and then I've sighed with relief as the credits rolled. But with 'Superbad' I saw the same sort of comedy and predictable language which is probably meant to shock - and I enjoyed the film. The first half of the film had me laughing out loud, though it seem look as though it was trying to out-crude itself every few minutes. But I enjoyed it mainly because I really liked the characters and although the film itself didn't blow me away, the people in it did. If a sequel is ever released, I'll be in the queue at the cinema because when the credits rolled, instead of sighing with relief - I wanted to see more of the gang.
Don't listen to the critics...
This film is brilliant, hilarious from start to finish with only a dip in the comedy for a slight serious tone toward the end. An excellent film that will have you laughing from start to finish, with good re-watch value as some jokes take a couple of watches to really sink in, generally at how ridiculous the boys situation becomes. Really not to be taken too seriously so if you're up for something fun to watch with little in the way of complex story line, Superbad's your man.
5 stars comedy, great movie to watch with friends or on your bill.
