Anyone, from babies to adults can develop Coeliac disease - a sensitivity to the protein called gluten, which is found in wheat and certain other cereals. The gluten causes damage to the absorbing areas of the gut, interfering with the absorption of nutrients and causing vitamin and mineral deficiency. In this fully revised and updated guide, authors offer reassuring and practical advice to sufferers of Coeliac disease, discussing symptoms and diagnosis, and introducing the gluten-free diet. This includes sound nutritional advice, hints and tips on adapting to a gluten-free lifestyle, and a wealth of delicious recipes for every occasion. Understanding the condition is halfway to coping with it. This excellent book helps you to do both.

The Ultimate Gluten-Free Diet
Since my husband was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease I have been collecting any information and advice to help us. Obviously it has affected my life as well as his with regard to diet and cooking.
I have discovered 'The Ultimate Gluten-Free Diet' by Dr.Peter Rawcliffe and Ruth James. This is not just a book about diet alone.
Dr.Rawcliffe gives a full and clear explanation on causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. It is easy to follow and understand even if you do not know anything about Coeliac. Part of the book is written in question and answer form.
It is also packed with useful information from a chart showing the foods you can eat, advice on eating out, to a list of useful contact addresses.
In the second part of the book Ruth James gives advice on gluten-free cooking and there are over 100 easy to follow tried and tested recipes.
If you have Coeliac Disease or care for someone who does then this is the book you should not be without.
Not so relevant as the title claims
The medical information about the causes of the coeliac disease is outdated.
The food receipes look as if they were compiled in the following way: take a normal recipe book and select those foods in which wheat flour can be replaced with gluten-free specialty products, provided the taste and consistency remains the same. There are very few flourless recipes in this book.
An excellent book
This is an excellent book, very informative as well as very interesting and written in a very appropriate style for patients and anyone with an interest in coeliac disease. I thought the recipes were a really good mix of the sort of exciting dishes needed for our multicultural eating habits. It will be very useful for our dietetic students.
