Manufacturer's Description
The Player in the network of media
ICY BOX IB-MP308 is an advanced HDD network media player. It is the nerve centre of the media you operate. It plays video, music and pictures via output equipment like TV set, home cinema equipment or stereo. It is capable to deliver Full High Definition – 1920 x 1080 p – TV and video output. It commands all usual video and audio formats and many less usual as well.
The ICY BOX IB-MP308 is designed for users WHo are familiar with local area networks (LANs) as well as for users WHo have only vague or no knowledge of LANs.
Integrated into a LAN, also a wireless LAN, the ICY BOX IB-MP308 accesses all available data sources, provided by the TV tuner, a stereo or camcorder, the PC or Mac, a NAS or an external HDD, a USB stick or the Internet.
It is also able to work without a network. Then a HDD containing the media data should be installed.
Anyway, the command of videos, music or pictures should be via the ICY BOX IB-MP308 as it saves a lot of energy compared to the PC. Using the remote control you easily operate the ICY BOX IB-MP308 using the on-screen menu.

Nice little media player - exactly what I needed
I had toyed with the idea of building a media centre PC that I could connect up to my "old" Sony CRT television, but didn't want to spend too much on components, especially the higher quality components that are required to keep the noise down. The IcyBox has saved me from having to do this. Space was also an issue.
There's no HDMI connector on my TV, so it was either S-video or, as I have used here, a composite (i.e. red/yellow/white) connection.
When this arrived I put a formatted 80Gb SATA hard drive in it, and away I went.
Some PROs:
a) The menu system is clear and will not take even novice users long to set up.
b) I ue the device to play .avi and .wmv files, to stream music from my PC through the home cinema system, and to watch slideshows of photographs with my choice of music in the background. All work perfectly well, and the player has dealt with EVERY type of media file that I have thrown at it so far.
c) It is extremely quiet, and although build-quality isn't fantastic, it does have a good look about it (including some neon lights that can be switched on/off in settings).
d) Will play movies/photos etc straight from USB flash drives (including cameras, memory sticks and so on).
Some things to watch out for that prevent this neat little device from getting the full 5-stars:
1. My unit arrived with a European style 3-pin plug on the power cable. Not much use in the UK I'm afraid. I had plenty of these spare, so no problem for me, but may incur addition cost for UK buyers.
2. The manual and info states that the device will take an IDE or a SATA hard drive. There is only a connection for the SATA device inside the box, and not much space in there if you have to use a SATA --> IDE adapter.
3. The manual that comes with the device is not the full manual. This full manual can be found online. It contains important information about setting up the wireless connections etc that are not found in the printed version that comes with the unit.
4. The device can't be seen on the network. Not a problem as I transfer files to it by using it as an external drive by plugging it into a PC. There is also an ftp facility, but haven't tried this yet.
Overall a good purchase. Very happy with it and great price too.
