Bittersweet Tale
This is not my usual style of music, the chatty style of Lilly Allen or Kate Nash, but I was driving to visit the graves of my in-laws when I first heared this ditty on the car radio. I must say I was moved to tears by the combination of sadness and hopefulness wrapped up in this track. The clever lyric on an immediately recognisable subject drew me in with an empathy that I have not felt for a long time when listening to a song. The subject of the song is not a million miles from the plot of 'American Beauty'. A man speaking from the grave about his own death in an upbeat way.
I can see from the reviews of his previous works that he does not fall into the trap of taking himself too seroiusly like some similar artists, and this stands him in good stead on this track. The words 'genuine' and 'down-to-earth' come to mind when listening to him. I will be keeping a close eye on this bloke and look forward to hearing more of his stuff in the near future.
