From the Back Cover

A woman's definitive guide to understanding and coping with thyroid disorders

Millions of women suffer from a thyroid condition; unfortunately, many of them may not know that the cause of their health problems is thyroid disease and so their symptoms often go undiagnosed. The most common thyroid disorders are autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto's disease and Graves' disease. And thyroid cancer is the fastest rising cancer among women. Now M. Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D., the most trusted voice on thyroid disorders, is helping women take charge of their health with a new, up-to-date edition of The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women.

This revised and updated second edition includes the latest research and corrects misinformation in other thyroid books. It addresses women's specific concerns about thyroid disease symptoms and treatment, including thyroid hormone therapy and how thyroid disease interacts with other women's health issues, such as pregnancy, menopause, emotional health, diet and weight gain, and other autoimmune disorders.

It answers your most urgent questions, including:

  • Are my panic attacks actually a symptom of too much thyroid hormone?
  • Is my fatigue related to hypothyroidism?
  • Is hormone replacement therapy an option for me?

The ultimate resource for any woman with a thyroid condition, The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women will help you make informed decision about your health in language you can understand.

Customer Reviews

Comprehensive, informative, helpful5
I have just been diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and hypothyroidism. I knew nothing about either conditions and was a bit put off by all the titles about thyroid conditions and different perspectives. After my GP gave me some info on the current science and conflict, I found Rosenthal's book a really good starter for me.

There are several complexities that women experience because of our hormone cycles and I found the work comprehensive and reassuring. It's calm, well-written and comes from a solid research base. Dr Rosenthal has overcome her thyroid problems and I think it helps her style of presentation.

There are plenty of resource links and bibliographical references, so again I thought a good signpost for individual interests.

The books you MUST read instead:3
The MUST-READ book on low thyroid is "Stop the Thyroid Madness", passionate and comprehensive. I also recommend the book "Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It" by Brownstein via Amazon.com

Now also recommending the even newer "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms?" which explains that if taking natural thyroid still leaves you with a number of symptoms, it is an autoimmune disease, not a primary thyroid problem. Based thoroughly on scientific research, this new book gives the low down on what your doctor never hears at his/her pharmaceutical sponsored education events. It is not a simplified single programme or test for everyone type of book but is based on your unique expression and genetics.

A good starting point3
I found Rosenthal's book a good starting point when first diagnosed. It explains very well the Biology of thyroid conditions, the symptoms, treatments etc. The focus on women meant that I learnt a lot that was not even considered in other books. As my diagnosis has progressed I have found it lacking in detail unfortunately but still do refer to it on occassion. If you've just been diagnosed and need something readable, that considers issues particular to women in an informative manner, I would recommend this book.
