I LOVE THIS BOOK !5
The author is not a medical professional and the book is all the better for it: comprehensive, thorough and honest as well as gritty and passionate. As a result of her decades of suffering the author has educated herself well beyond most doctors about low thyroid problems and exactly what is needed to get well.

Janie Bowthorpe pulls no punches, repeatedly and justifiably lambasting the overwhelming majority of doctors for what has to be a deliberate blindness and stubbornness about both synthetic thyroid and lab tests. No wonder most doctors hate the book.

This is a wonderful and very practical book that explains low thyroid and its proper treatment in language anyone can understand. We have all accepted inferior treatment for decades but thanks to this book we no longer need to do so. We no longer have to tolerate being told to eat less and exercise more, that it's all in the mind and we should see a psychiatrist, etc, etc, when in fact most doctors know nothing - or worse - about thyroid problems.

This book exists thanks to the internet which has empowered all of us to pool our knowledge, so that we no longer have to think our own experience is the exception and everyone else is getting better while we barely tread water. So this fantastic book is the result of the cooperation of hundreds of people with low thyroid, too many of whom have been harmed by being made to take synthetic thyroid (DOES NOT WORK) or by being told that the lab tests (especially that stupid TSH test) show they are normal!!!

Also, this is the ONLY thyroid book that both goes into detail about the connection between hypothyroid and adrenal insufficiency and advises on the various products available and just how much to take of each type (a couple of other books have a page or so, but not nearly this much practical information): at least 50% of us MUST support our adrenals in order to resolve our low thyroid problems.

Two very tiny caveats about both this and all other thyroid books:

a) there is rarely more than a brief mention of the benefits of iodine, so I also recommend "Iodine, Why You Need It and Why You Can't Live Without It" by David Brownstein MD (you will probably have to order it via Amazon.com) and

b) the even newer book "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms?" explains that, if taking natural thyroid still leaves you with a number of symptoms, it is an autoimmune disease, not a primary thyroid problem. Based thoroughly on scientific research, it gives the low down on what your doctor never hears at his/her pharmaceutical sponsored education events. It is not a simplified one programme or test for everyone type of book but is based on your unique expression and genetics.

Finally someone who understands!!5
I have been battling for the last decade to get decent medical care with regards to my hypothyroidism, and was slowly sliding deeper and deeper into the murky depths that under-treated hypothyroidism can lead to. The weight gain, the constant aches and pains, not being able to walk any distance, not being able to exercise comfortably, hating being over-weight - despite every effort to eat properly, losing my hair, having swollen legs and feet - I could go on and on. Thanks to Janie, and the thousands of others who refuse to have their voices muted, there is finally light at the end of the tunnel!

Read this book, do what it takes to get yourself better, and then make your voice heard by joining me and many others online - if we shout loud enough, we CAN stop the thyroid madness!

Excellent it helped me no end5
This is one of the best books giving an insight into how there are other treatments for hypothyroidism if you are left feeling ill on the usual levothyroxine prescribed by your Dr. Janie explains about interpretation of the blood tests, how your symptoms of fatigue, aches and pains, athritis, and other nasty symptoms can remain under current treatment options and how many people on thyroid treatment end up on anti depressants, NSAIDs, blood pressure drugs, and many other drugs which are actually caused by the inferior treatment of their thyroid condition.
This book is a must have for anyone who is hypothyroid and feels that their health is still suffering even if they have decided that they will compromise because the Dr says 'it is not your thyroid' the common mantra by the health professionals of today. It is a book written by Janie a patient advocate with input by patients for other patients based on what they have learned during thier long journey to wellness by employing treatments which have been lost because of the lack of training Drs now recieve in clinical assessment and their being controlled by the insurance and trained in colleges funded mostly by pharmaceutical companies.
Try it you will be very surprised and it might be the new beginning you are looking for. It is for many of us.
Good luck
