Synopsis
Documentary profiling the life and career one of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport, Julio Cesar Chavez. Winner of six world titles, Mexican-born Chavez became a national hero, instilling fear and commanding respect from those who faced him in the ring. Interviews with boxing great Mike Tyson, Don King, and Oscar De La Hoya give the film some much-needed clout, while behind the scenes footage and boxing action add up to a full and satisfying portrait of a sporting legend. Actor Diego Luna (Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, CRIMINAL) makes an impassioned directorial debut with a subject that is evidently close to his heart.

Not what I expected - a disapointment!!
This DVD is interesting in parts but the film fails to capture the greatness of Julio Cesar Chavez's career in the boxing ring. In regards to Chavez the fighter, this skips too many of his important fights and huge chunks of his career. Chavez v Whittaker is not shown and barely even mentioned. The fights they do show are not shown in any type of depth at all. The content of the film also drifts into the political situation of Mexico and not being Mexican myself I found this to be irrelevant and boring. Far too much time of this film was devoted to the internal politics of Mexico which is not what I wanted to see. What I hoped to see in this DVD was for the film to concentrate on Chavez's career and a little on Chavez's upbringing. This film didnt do that for me and unless your Mexican, this film will disapoint. I doubt I will watch this again.

An outstanding portrait of an outstanding fighter

This is the career bio of the great Mexican fighter and all time legend Julio Cesar Chavez. Chavez's career lasted from 1983 until 2005 (22 years)and saw him amass an incredible record of 107-6-2 (86) including an incredible 37 'world' title fights, accross 3 weight divisions and including a staggering combined 27 title defences It sould be noted as well that after a ninety fight unbeaten run, 4 of those 6 defeats came after Chavez turned 46 and had already been a pro for 14 years.

It is only befitting then that such a talent gets a wortwhile release and not a posthumous one. This dvd runs for 78 minutes and includes interviews with Chavez himself along with the likes of Oscar De lay Hoya (who twice beat Chavez), Mike Tyson, Don King and Chavez's son Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr (as of 2008 an undefeated pro) amongst others.

Of course no career retrospective would be complete without footage of the great man himself and this dvd is full of clips of the great man himself and all his major battles.

With a career spanning 2 decades, 37 world title fights and over 110 bouts there is of course probabably enough footage to cover a 50 dvd boxset and if your after a complete set of all the 'BIG' matches, then this sint it. This is a career retrosepective and a fascinating one at that.

I would reccomend this to both fans of Chavez and those new to the name (possinly as a precursor to seeking out the full bouts). A very good effort indeed!

a real champion
this man was and is an absolute legend.the film could have been a little more revealing,but all the same was well put together.being somebody who grew up watching this fighter i found it hard to watch what could be the greatest champ of all time ,fighting and losing to small hall bums.a good film if you are a boxing fan buy this ,i can say no more
