Product Description

THE unforgettable 60s was the decade in which West Ham United enjoyed their greatest successes. A new book entitled West Ham in the Sixties - The Jack Burkett Story, written by Terry Roper gives a fascinating insight into those glory days as well as telling the story of one of the club's unsung heroes.

When West Ham won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup in successive seasons at Wembley during that era, only seven players took part in both finals. Burkett was one of them and he talks candidly about those years, including playing alongside the World Cup triumvirate of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. The book also illustrates how West Ham stood on the edge of greatness and yet, inexplicably, allowed it to pass them by.

There are previously untold stories such as the West Ham team meeting when the players openly criticised Moore about his style of captaincy and an astonishing occasion when Burkett was severely concussed and had to travel home on his own from Sheffield carrying his West Ham kit in a plastic bag under his arm, after an overnight stay in hospital. The cosseted stars of the modern day Premier League would not be able to comprehend such a situation.

Burkett gives talks vividly of the days when he was on the coaching staff at Southend and the iconic Bobby Moore took over as manager. The whole world knows about Moore the player but until now, very little has been known about Moore the manager.

Burkett recalls his years as an employee of the PFA when he became a mentor to some of the most famous present day Premier League stars, notably Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and John Terry who were just unknown youngsters at the time.

West Ham in the Sixties - The Jack Burkett Story is a football tale with a difference. It will interest fans who revel in nostalgia, but it will particularly appeal to those West Ham supporters who want to relive the greatest period in the club's history.
