Frank, brave, radical poems about suffering, womanhood, old-5
Anna Swir's poems are extraordinarily succint evocations of her life. They are all retrospective; she tells of a youth of suffering and starvation in an artist's studio in Warsaw, of her own body and its sensuality, and of the condition of an old woman, undesired, dispensable, and alone. The poems are miniatures, abstract and stripped bare of the extraneous. In all of them, an uncompromising and unbroken spirit sings out. Swir lived through the Warsaw uprising, about which she also wrote. Her feminism is unique; raw, strong, parodoxically lacking in confessionalism. She speaks of the body in its richness and its dilapidation. The austerity of her style makes her quite unique.
