Product Description

The Deftones have always been known for walking a tightropeof extremes, from crunchy guitar riffing to gentle, melodically fleshed-out chords, with vocals ranging from a breathy hush to devilish bellowing, and some occasional hip-hop phrasing for good measure. With WHITE PONY, Deftones mastermind and vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno has brought the band to full gallop.
Somewhat inspired by the game show, "Feiticeira" recounts a chilling abduction from the first person perspective, while "Digital Bath" features moody verses and brutal choruses. "Elite" uses a vocal approach usually reservedfor death metal bands while "Rx Queen" is morbidly romantic. "Teenager" celebrates the purity of adolescence and "Passenger" showcases a vocal duel between Tool/A Perfect Circle frontman Maynard James Keenan who co-wrote the track. Deftly produced by the band and metal producing veteran Terry Date,WHITE PONY is far from a sideshow; it's the main event.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Sensual and mellow were never adjectives associated with aggro band Deftones--until White Pony, that is. The quintet's third outing finds their aural punch softened and deepened, lending songs such as "Digital Bath" a sultry, layered edge. More Tool than Pantera in its sonics, White Pony, in fact, includes a collaboration with Tool/A Perfect Circle singer Maynard James Keenan in the haunting "Passenger". Fans of the band's earlier, harder albums will still find some satisfaction in these developments. "Elite" boasts chunky riffing and metal/rap leanings, while "Korea" is anguished and edgy. More striking, however, are songs like the quirky, futuristic, fervent "RX Queen" and the gentle "Teenager". Overall, this album is not as suitable for the mosh pit as their previous albums, Adrenaline and Around The Fur. Instead, it's a diverse, dynamic and heady album that avoids any preconceived notions of the Deftones' sound and manages to provide an indication of what this band may be capable of in the future. --Katherine Turman

urban panoramic5
As clichéd as this sounds, here's an album that changed my outlook on music. Not in the asteroid-smashing-against-earth way, but in a slowburning, creeping manner. I never subscribed to 'nu-metal', with the Korn's, Stain'd, Limp Bizkit's and Incubii, etc, but I did love Faith No More's music, and in Deftones the ideology and execution actually marry perfectly, while still having their own identity. Plus Chino Moreno can actually sing.

This album is their definitive. While the new one (SNW) is 5-star quality and more catchy, it's still nowhere near the scope present here. This album feels like a concept, plays like a greatest hits, and treads the fine line between heavy and melodic throughout, as opposed to purely heavy or purely melodic tracks.

For newcomers, don't start here! Leave this and SNW 'til last, or work it chronologically - they do evolve quite naturally...

One of the Greatest Albums of All Time 5
Words cannot describe how much I love White Pony. I bought the album for the songs Change and Passenger (mainly because Maynard James Keenan guest stars on that track and he's from my favortie band, Tool) but I didn't count on the whole album being great. Chino Moreno's voice has a very sensual appeal to it and its one of the best I have heard in a long time.

Best Songs:
Digital Bath, Elite, Rx Queen, Knife Prty, Change, Passenger, Korea, and Pink Maggot

I would also suggest getting the special re-released edition of the album because it features a new opener-Back to School (Mini Maggot).

a classic... no... seriously!5
This is one of the few albums I own that never, never, never gets old. I mean it! I bought this album right when it came out after liking 'Around the Fur' moderately. I was shocked at how far ahead of the last album this one was! I mean light years ahead! (no disrespect for those who worship 'Around the fur' and 'Adrenaline'.. they are both great albums but simply lack the distinct, brooding atmosphere that the 'Pony' reeks of) I have rarely come across and album as absorbing, and haunting as this.

From start to finish, the Deftones bounce back from dark, depressing, atmospheric pieces to violent, heavy tracks that just blend together to create something truly frightening. Chino, of course, stands head and shoulders above the mix, with his droning, dying, beautiful voice. You dont come across something this well put together every day. Intentionally or accedintally 'White Pony' is... amazing... simply amazing..
