!!!
What really amazes me, is how a genius like this guy managed to stay out of the limelight, despite being extraordinarily gifted and having already written so many great songs. I mean, I am HUGE music listener, and I never heard of the man. I stumbled by mere chance into this album because I love to listen to unplugged-like renditions of songs, and I was looking for something like that. After listening to this, I purchased all of the Ben Folds Five albums, all of the Ben Folds albums, a couple of DVDs, and all of the existing music sheets books (got to be five or six of them), because I'd love so much to play some of his stuff. I found the way Folds plays piano so innovative, somewhere I read that he's got a classical approach in playing pop music and I agree with that. He's an incredibily talented musician. Btw, you might want to get the version with the bonus DVD, which includes videos from several performances plus some other interesting stuff.
Ben Folds = Brill!
I would definitely recommend this album if you have recently heard of Ben Folds or even a life long fan but yet to buy this album! It contains Ben Folds playing in different locations across the US live and rocking! He has awesome talent which must not go unrecognised or under appreciated! Very glad I purchased this album and can't say I dislike any of the tracks on this album, all have their unique qualities and brilliant piano solos and dynamic vocals.
Ben Folds in the raw!
It was always going to be interesting to see what Ben Folds would do when it came to playing live without former band members Darren Jesse and Robert Sledge. Bravely, he decided to go on a solo tour, stripped of everything except his piano - and this fantastic album is the result. It's the way Ben Folds always should have been heard - acoustic, in the raw and bursting with energy - in an album that is by turns both joyfully anarchic, and wistfully beautiful.
It's packed with classics from all four of the BFF albums, and, of course, from Ben's solo work 'Rockin' The Suburbs' - and there's even a brilliant rendition of Elton John's 'Tiny Dancer' thrown in for good measure. Highlights of the 17 tracks include a fantastically energetic performance of 'Philosophy', including a solo on mike-and-piano-strings; a brave attempt to perform 'Narcolepsy' with only a piano (it works!); and the (surprisingly tuneful) audience backing vocals on 'Army' and 'Not the Same'. Also, for anyone curious to know what Mrs Frally Folds and little Louis look like, the CD booklet is packed full of photos.
In conclusion, this album showcases just how far the piano-playing talents of Ben Folds stretch, and provides undisputed proof of how, even when it's just him and a piano, Ben Folds is still rockin' the suburbs with the best of them.
