Shine On
The Ozarks were the most eclectic and best of the new wave of country rock bands that emerged in the USA in the early 70's an opinion confirmed by the critics if not the buying public.
It's amazing that this CD has only just been released as this is a classic set bringing together all the best aspects of their work.
Recorded in a Civil War farmhouse in 1974 and produced by the legendary Glyn Johns, there are so many good things going on here that is is difficult to pinpoint a particular track. Many will know 'Jackie Blue' which was a hit for the band, but this does not tell the whole story of what this band where about.
Although the band prove they can rock on the excellent 'Look Away' and joyous 'Tidal Wave'it is the lighter rootsy material where this release hits a peak. Listen to the sublime harmonies on 'Lowlands' and the uplifting and optimistic lyrics of 'You Made it Right' as proof of the joy in this music.
This is a totally unpretentious set produced by a band full of sincerety. Their are shades of JJ Cale, america and the eagles here by way of comparison, but no band has made country rock sound so good.
THEY'VE FINALLY DONE IT!!!!!!! - Supplement
I received the disc this morning and am pleased to say it met my expectations 100%. The disc comes with a fold out sleeve comprising 4 disc-box sized pages (8 if you include both sides) of notes pictures and the lyrics, rather the like the pullout supplement to the vinyl album if you are lucky enough to have this. Quality of print and package is excellent. On the inside of the disc box, under the disc are two further photos of the boys and the legends "The Ozark Mountain Daredevils" and "At Ruedi Valley Ranch 1974".
The sound is excellent I am pleased to say and nothing appears to have been lost in the transcription.
I hope this helps anyone interested to buy. Well done New Era!
The Ozarks Best Album - A Classic
I had this album when it was first released on vinyl - a very long time ago - my favorite then. There is something uniquely special about this album. I think it's to do with the mix and quality of the songs, and the uplifting message that runs right through the whole album. The lyrics capture their great sense of humour, their sensitivity and observation of life.
The musicianship is top class - on what is I think their best album. Between the foot tapping, feel good tracks there are two of the most exquisite ballads you will ever hear ('It couldn't be better' & 'Lowlands') - anywhere.
A lot of loyal people have worked very hard over the last few years to get this album re-released - to whom we have to be extremely grateful.
Whether you know of the Ozarks or not, whatever your taste in music, this is gentle feel-good music at it's absolute best.
- a superb rare gem.
