Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Rap formulas of the day are given the boot on Madvillainy. Having reinvented himself as psychedelic masked rapper MF Doom (not to mention alter egos King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn), Daniel Dumile--formerly KMD's Zev Love X--has fittingly teamed up with producer Madlib, who's no stranger to aliases himself (see Quasimodo and Yesterdays New Quintet). Most of the 22 tracks clock in at around two minutes and many cuts consist of Doom spitting one long verse. Nobody chops up jazz standards and reworks them into SP 1200-induced soundscapes better than Madlib, so the warbled strings and unpredictable tempo shifts on "Strange Ways" and the flipped accordion sounds on "Accordion" carry the texture of a jazz record.

While Madlib's predilection for piecing together cryptic found sounds can get a bit tiresome, Doom's self-deprecating narrative of a man "on a fast track to half-sane" is genius and madness all rolled into one big blunt. Yep, on "America's Most Blunted" he gloats about being "nominated for the best rolled L's." While "Rainbows" proves that Doom shouldn't ever sing--and yeah, his scratchy, drawling flow is an acquired taste--he's still "got more lyrics than the church's got 'Oooh Lords.'" This is rap for frying your brain cells, and we all know they need a good cooking every now and then. --Dalton Higgins, Amazon.com

Got more lyrics than the church got "Ooh Lord"'s5
Very good hip-hop album by the legendary Metal Face and jazz sampling maestro Madlib, two music makers who in their respective roles as MC and producer fly most in the face of popular gangsta/commercial rap. Some say this is Doom's best album, and while i personally prefer Vaudeville Villain, his bizarre and impossibly complex lyrics are really well complemented by some of the best beats Madlib has done yet. Certainly those who enjoyed Lord Quas's timeless "Unseen" album will feel right at home here with the eerie film dialogue clips (rock on Sun-Ra!), haunting jazz loops and overall nicely blunted atmosphere; whilst Quasimoto's first effort was a very laid back album, Doom's influence seems to have given Madlib's production a bit more of a mischievous energetic feel (whilst still being a killer smoke-up album). One thing tho, this album is a definite grower, and stayed ignored for a good couple of weeks by me after the first listen. But give it time and get a feel for what the duo are trying to do, and you will rarely find another hip hop album as fresh or inventive as Madvillainy.

Ahead of it's time - in the top ten Hip Hop records ever.5
Anyone who is rating this album poorly is doing so because they can't understand it. Much like when 36 Chambers came out or Octagonecologyst it was almost to much ahead of it's time, so advanced that people couldn't handle it. I'd say a lot of people want the same old recycled beats and cliched rap lines to fill their shelves but you won't get any of that here. This is truly an artistic album aimed at people who enjoy artistically advanced music - it destroys Hip Hop formulas, kills the blue-print and is completely punk rock in it's execution. This is possibly the most liquid coupling of artists I've ever heard. Madlib and Doom read each others minds and morph into one person, a beat/word machine.

Buy this and give it some time to wash over your brain, the jazzy atmospheres and buttery flows will destroy your opinions of Hip Hop. This sits in my Top 5 Hip Hop albums of all time.

A beguiling album of hip-hop5
This is quite simply an astonishing LP. Madlib's production, where he combines jazzy loops with excerpts from 50s movies and game shows (or a least this is what is sounds like), provide an eery backdrop for Doom's gruff rhymes. I am still not sure what Doom is rapping about overall (!), his rapping style moves randomly from subject to subject. But his writing ability is not in question... there are numerous hilarious and clever lyrics. And with every single listen, you pick up something new.. Production is quite simply awesome, quirky, intelligent and definitely not formulaic!

This album is an absolutely essential purchase but persevere as it is one which requires listening more than once...!
