Zach Braff's indie hit "Garden State" did more than have a soundtrack: It introduced the mainstream to a bunch of great bands like the Shins, Frou Frou and so on. One of the most spellbinding is Cary Brothers, a rugged-looking singer-songwriter with a heartbreaker voice. His EP "All the Rage" looks unassuming, but pulls you into his beautiful mix of acoustic ballads and powerpop.

It opens with the now-well-known "Blue Eyes," a soaring acoustic song that ends wistfully with "I just wanna sing a song with you," followed by the delicate ballad "Something." "Supposed to Be" switches gears into some solid powerpop, complete with Brothers' solid riffs and twisting basslines. Finally he finishes up with another gentle acoustic ballad, the poignant "Honestly."

Don't let the grocery-bag brown slipcase fool you: L.A.-based Brothers is the very image of a good musician with zero hype. His debut EP has that Elliott Smith vibe, but without the sound of doom -- Brothers sounds sad, hopeful and wistful, calmly reminiscing all about love.

Brothers has an exceptional voice -- in "Supposed to Be," he sounds distant and a little haughty, as befits the music. But in the ballads his vocals become much more intimate and sweet. He does his own basic instrumentation (bass and guitar) himself, with help from Jason Kanakis (guitar) and Chad Fischer (drums, bass, and keys). These three guys have a good grip on what makes solid ballads and rock music.

His songwriting is particularly good. It's all about love, by the way -- hoping for love, having love, losing love, looking back on love. "All the lights on and you are alive/But you can't point the way to your heart," Brothers croons, "So sublime, when the stars are aligned/But you don't know/You don't know the greatness you are."

Cary Brothers' "All the Rage" is a rare treat -- its main flaw is that it isn't more than four songs long. Here's hoping for a full-length album of this gorgeous music.

I first heard Cary Brothers' music through my love of the TV show Scrubs, and have been in love with the song 'Blue Eyes' ever since.

If you are a fan of acoustic, heartfelt music then buy this, and make Cary Brothers the star he deserves to be.
