Delicious doom and gloom for mope fiends
I bought this after hearing the haunting track 'The Cruel Mother' on Late Junction and listening to it again and again on the BBC's internet Radio Player. It's pretty grim stuff in some ways, but it's also a beautiful set of ballads, with a warm, intimate sound. The only downside is the lack of lyrics on the liner notes.
I hadn't bought a British folk album since Chieftains 5 in the 70s (when the late and much missed John Peel was the Late Junction of the day}. I don't think it'll take me that long to buy another, if Alasdair Roberts' other albums are like this one.
Big let down.
I don't get it. I wish I did but I don't. Being a big fan of Will Oldham, I had high expectations of this album but unfortunately it's a big tuneless rambling, depressing ,mess. If you live in the 16th Century, this might be your thing. Otherwise stay clear.
A sleekit wee beastie of a CD
I am not too certain why i chose to click on the add "No Eartly Man" to basket button, but i did. Perhaps it was the mentions that i had read about this album over the last couple of weeks. Still, they have never been a guarantee that a CD once arrived is going to be any good.
This CD is a gem, a dour, fragile crystalline Scottish epic, The timeless and suprising combination of Bonny Prince Oldham in the proudcer's chair, the grace that is Alisdair Roberts' voice and the choice of traditional songs from the British Isles is so sublime it makes me want to cry into mah whisky.
Finally after 30 years Dick Gaughan's "Handful of earth" has a rival.
