Customer Reviews
The beginnings of Folk Rock
In the 50s Shirley Collins-a rather stunning looking blonde lady-carried a lone torch for English folk music and stayed forever in the same turf only devisting with this album made with a rock star producing music which was similar to Fairport Convention who were still playing psychedelic music.
In fact Shirley maybe never wanted to be a rock'n'roll singer even though she would have made a great one
So here its a reversal of sorts as American folk musicians changed to folk rock and psychedelia but Fairport Convention began as a kind of English answer to Jefferson Airplane and then turned 100% into folk music.
Shirley Collins was really on the fringe and this album is named as important and you see her mantle taken up by Maddy Prior and Steeleye Span by the 70s.
An Iconic Masterpeice
Without this album folk rock would never have happened. We would still be stood round singing with one finger in or ear and a pint resting on our beer bellies. If you only ever buy one folk albuum, make it this one
