Both a soundtrack to their new feature film and a new album in its own right, Outkast's Idlewild feels every bit a worthy follow-up to Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, the double album that marked out Big Boi and Andre 3000 as two of the most talented populist-experimentalists working in hip-hop. In keeping with the film's 30s-themed premise, Idlewild sees blues, ragtime, jazz and vaudeville infiltrate further into the Outkast design: Andre 3000's "Idlewild Blue" is borne along on a spare, Johnny Cash-style guitar line, while "The Mighty O" - a rare track that features Andre and Big Boi together, rapping back to back - thieves its hook from Cab Calloway's classic "Minnie The Moocher". There's no shortage of special guests: Macy Gray crops up on chilling torch-song "The Greatest Show On Earth", Lil' Wayne and Snoop Dogg feature on "Hollywood Divorce", and Sleepy Brown - a tender-voiced R&B singer signed to Big Boi's Purple Ribbon Records - crops up on a number of tracks. Some may be disappointed by the closing "A Bad Note", an indulgent eight minutes of feedback, but truthfully there's enough in the preceding 24 tracks to satisfy any Outkast fan that loved Speakerboxxx/The Love Below. The big question after that album was: will Outkast split up? The question now is: where can they go next? --Louis Pattison

Disappointing compared to legends like Stankonia
In Idlewild Outkast seem to lose all essence of what they really can do: excellent songwriting and catchy beats. This album is so obviously a film soundtrack, with irritating country tracks and coutless interludes. It is a shame there are so few collaberations between Dre and Big Boi on this one because I think thats how they do it best. This albums a real dissapointment when you think of Outkasts earlier albums like Stankonia and Big Boi and Dre Present. Not worth buying, if you ask me!
Immense!
Love this. Outkast have really grown on me since speakerboxxx/love below and i think this is the best album from them i have. I really like the Hollywood divorce song with lil weezy who is great here and i love Idlewild Blue. I'd love it if they did more songs like that, bluesy like their roots.
Overall, a great album and well worth checking out. Beats are great and so are lyrics. Plus loads of cool guests!
Outkast again come ou with a unique style and...it works!
Again Outkast have come out with a whole new style of music. Not happy with being perhaps the best there ever will be in the hip hop - funk scene, they come out with Idlewild. A magnificent mix of 1930's blues, Jazz, R&B, Hip Hop, and some very funky soul.
When I first bought this album, I didn't know what to expect. I listened to it once through and was gutted. My favourite artists of all time were no longer that, they had brought out a below average album and thoroughly disappointed me.
However, I am at times a very fickle being. For I gave this a second chance and it proved to me, that this may even be Outkasts best work yet. With every listen the lyrics and beats make an ever bigger impact. This is without a doubt in my top 5 albums of all time.
Remember, if you purchase this album, give it time. Finding that this is infact a masterpiece after first thinking of it as a failed experiment, will make this even sweeter.
Enjoy.
