Great stuff
I have been listening to this for a while now and it really has gotten under my skin. 'Setting Sun' in particular is in heavy rotation and great for listening to in the car. I agree with others here: The Sundays and The Cocteau Twins popped into my head too which is certainly no insult. If you like tuneful, indie-pop with great jangly guitars and sweet vocals then give this a try.
Haunting and Transcendant
Hello sah! I first heard of the band from a local news rag at my public transport orifce and I thought I'd check them out. Push me in the mud and roll me over. They are brilliant. Setting Sun, The City's Burning and Velvet Girl are astonishing and cling to you; like a twig you might snag as you march past, all clad in dog-bearers gear. Now, I loathe 'indie' music as it is now, in the UK. In fact, I have to look really hard to find good modern music. However, these people. They dissolve my rule that modern music has nought to offer. I love them. I saw them play at Leeds festical last year (2006) and I know, theyre not really 'gig' material, but I just stood there. Listening, transfixed in their almost numinous performance. They personify seasons to me (you choose which. (for yourselfs, bien sur) Amazing. If you listen to what NME tells you to. Now (and only now) is a good to listen.

Oz Fest
This album is a phantasmagorical experience. It's music with a dark undercurrent like Interpol or the Breeders. In fact if Howling Bells had been around when Buffy the vampire slayer was made I could have imagined them appearing in the Bronze playing Velvet Girl. Other standout tracks are Blessed Night, Setting Sun, In The Woods and Wishing Stone. As other reviewers have said the album is a slow burner. I had to listen 5 or 6 times for the songs to reveal themselves in their full glory.
Saw the Bells play live 3 times last year and when I saw them in December in Hamburg, supporting Placebo they played a blistering set and Juanita showed herself to be a great frontwoman. Also saw Arctic Monkeys who made the best British album of 2006 play live earlier in the year but it was Howling Bells that really blew me away on that cold winter's night. Catch them on tour now in the UK if you can.
This is my favourite album of 2006 and even eclipses (if you'll forgive the pun) the Arctic's debut.
