Instrumental genius
I found this band when trying to find similar artists to Pelican and Tool. I'm glad I did but wouldn't compare them to either of the two mentioned. The album goes from top to bottom without stopping, merely slowing down as if to take a breather, changing from prog to metal and exuding a chilled vibe often all in the same track. Definitely one of the best buys in the past year for me.

High Quality Instrumental Rock
Russian Circles are a three-piece from Chicago. If you like Red Sparowes, Pelican or Mono then chances are you will like Russian Circles. I do.
The band veer from gentle, beautiful guitar to tightly controlled heavy chords with ease. Each song on the album stands on its own.
Carpe begins gently but soon develops into a powerful rock tune.
Micah is a slow burner, lots of picked strings rather than just thrash chords, lulling the listener into a warm cosy place prior to Death Rides a Horse, which begins with a bang. Again the focus is on picked individual notes rather than chords, but with able underpinning from the bass the effect is fast, flowing powerful rock.
Enter begins quietly but soon develops a strong rhythm with bass and drums working particularly well together. The track stops suddenly near its end and fades out with a simple tune sounding like flutes and violins played on a keyboard.
You Already Did has an almost Native American feel at the beginning, led by the drums, picking up pace about a third of the way through, finishing as it began with the drums to the fore.
Which leaves New Macabre to bring the album to a close, with the band demonstrating how tight they are as a unit. For a band that's only been together since late 2004 this album hangs together fantastically well. I'm looking forward to what comes next.
