Customer Reviews

A dark masterpiece5
Certainly not one to have on while doing the ironing, but this is a wonderful work of hillbilly/gothic music (It's possibly unfair to classify it as 'Christian Rock', as there are fewer overtly religious lyrics than on previous Woven Hand albums...God's still there, just more subtly). I should point out, though, that I think the instrument that the previous reviewer described as a violin is actually a nyckelharpa, or possibly a hurdy-gurdy (which Edwards has been known to play on other recordings, and other tracks on this same album).
You can hear all kinds of unlikely influences coming together on this record, the banjo and the church organ on track 3 weaving a sparkly olde-worldey church in the backwoods impression, and track 10 sounding like nothing so much as one of Joy Division's gloomier moments. The only track in a major key is the instrumental 'Bible and Bird', which is a surprisingly easygoing piece of drivetime country music, heavy on the slide guitar. If you know 16 Horsepower, you may be disappointed that this record doesn't rock as much as Edwards's previous band, but there is a brooding intensity to it that more than makes up.

Powerful, Haunting and Moody5
If you liked David Eugene Edwards first album, 'Woven Hand' then you'll absolutely adore the powerful and haunting melodies of 'Mosaic'. Edwards writes such moody lyrics and delivers them by weaving his words as they pass his lips. This gives a haunting edge to his music. Each track different in its own right still has the unmistakable tone that is Eugene Edwards. Fine string work on all of the songs and the distinctive and unusual sound of the piano on 'Whistling Girl', or the bell on 'Elktooth' and the violin on 'Slota Prow - Full Armour' make for a different mood on each track. Each song is backed by the constant rolling rythym of the drums that add weight and depth to the sound that is Woven Hand - a must buy.
