Customer Reviews
Warning:Re-recordings!!
I bought this last week and to my horror these are not the original versions....sounds like dreadful 80s bland production, different instrumentation and his voice isn't too hot either. There must be a better compilation than this!It doesn't say it's different on the cd,by the way.
Genius
I was lucky to be introduced to the genius of John Martyn via a mate at uni who had a spare gig ticket. To say i'm grateful is an massive understatement. i don't have this anthology cd, but it appears to have most of the tracks which sum up the poetry and musical beauty of John's long career. this guy is a true legend. Buy this, and if he touches your soul (as this stuff tends to do!) explore further.
Over 30 years of John Martyn
I know that John Martyn doesn't suit all but for me he is one of the only artists to still send a shiver down my spine as the riffs and lilts and words blend in such harmony.
If you enjoy this niche then on Anthology are some of the most beautiful love songs that you will ever hear, "May You Never", "Couldn't Love You More" and "Sweet Little Mystery"...where does he get those melodies from?
For those new to John he takes a little geting used to but don't give up on him. The more aggressive songs display a talented musician who goes down routes others would not dream of.
Unfortunately he's not well at the moment (Winter 2007) and I feel cheated (that's unfair) that perhaps he will not create such wonderful songs again but how can I complain when he has brought so much romance and happiness into my life over the last 30 years.
Give Anthology a try I cannot believe such great tracks are selling for a piddly £7!
