Album Description
Liverpool's finest Candie Payne is set to release her much anticipated debut album `I Wish I Could Have Loved You More' on May 21st.
It's an album full of darkly seductive pop diamonds. The title track blasts off in confident style, with an incessant melody, pounding drums and a soaring vocal. Next, `Why Should I Settle For You' draws you into one of the album's many dark corners. Such as `A Different You', a big brash epic - all brooding drums and percussion that makes Candie's lyrics of lost love sound all the more fragile and beautiful. At the other extreme `By Tomorrow' canters along like a three-minute white knuckle ride. And in an album full of broken hearts and fallen angels "Turn back now" ends the album with the devil right on the doorstep.
In all, `I Wish...' echoes the timelessness of Dusty and the modern blues of Portishead, an underlying eeriness and even loneliness in three minute kitchen-sink dramas reminiscent of classic British cinema or a Smiths' monochrome single sleeve.
From the Artist
"These songs are trying to communicate the thoughts and feelings that go through your head, the things that you might not be ready to say out loud yet," explains Candie
About the Artist
Raised in Liverpool and New York, Candie left working at a vintage clothes shop to hook up with ex-Stairs lead man Edgar Jones to front his new project, and honed her skills in earnest for the best part of a year. A change of direction in the band and Candie jumped off at the next stop, pausing to do the odd song with Mersey favourite's Tramp Attack. However, fate was to intervene when Bandwagon club lynchpin and long time friend Gary Bandit, introduced her to producer Simon Dine (Noonday Underground). A rough demo and a clutch of hand written verse later, and Candie and Simon set to work in the studio on the album.
There is a fresh and spontaneous sound to this record that stems largely from this 24 year old's passion for music, with everything from the Beasties to the Bonzos in the tour van, and she's even recently recorded a selection of songs from the soundtrack to Bugsy Malone. Look out for them on future b-sides.
Having just finished her debut tour with The Bees, she is playing the launch night for Bestival on April 20th before setting off on her own headlining tour in May, with a summer full of festivals to follow.

Better than Amy
For those of you that may think that Amy Winehouse is the future or present of female vocalists - think again. This album is pure soul - comparisons with Dusty Springfield (actually imagine Dusty mixed up with Portishead!) are not lightly made, however, listen and relish the vocalist that makes those links and comparisons real.
Each track is strong, outstanding from a pack of gems are I wish I could have loved you more, In the morning, All I need to hear, One more chance, and Turn back now. Beautiful voice, beautiful debut, pure retro white soul, buy it and fall in love.
not what i expected
having seen candie on Jools Holland once, i had very good memories and bought the album on the basis of that. I was quite disappointed. I can't remember exactly what i liked about her, although i remember the band was tight and grooving. The album stuck me on first listen as a bit harsh in the production sense, a bit too heavy and excessive in terms of instrument levels and not the live sound i recall liking (I only saw the performance on the show once mind you and memory can be strangely misleading sometimes). I am playing it now and maybe as one review states it could be a grower. Indeed it does sound a little too Portishead, Morcheeba et al, and I really never liked Dusty Springfield that much. I think the next album could be good, her voice is sometimes moving.
Great Album.
Great album, solitary and upbeat, very retro as the album has that 60's feel to it, something we don't hear these days apart from Amy Winehouse who's music is of a different style. The tunes are creative and stylish and you will immediately enjoy this album. You could compare Candie Payne to other artists, You could compare any artist to an artist that is the easy part. But to say (like one reviewer) she's the "new Amy Winehouse" is a load of crap and a lazy comparison. This album is great and hopefully the start of a promising career for Candie Payne.
