For nigh on 16 years now Tom and Christina Carter have been collaborating as Charalambides, carving their own niche in the netherworld of psychedelic free-folk on eight official album releases and countless self-released CDRs. 'Likeness' is exactly the sort of slow-burning, exploratory acid-folk you'd expect...Christina's singular, bewitching vocals floating across Tom's otherworldly, spectral guitar soundscapes. The twist comes lyrically; the majority of tracks here feature words from the traditional and public domain American songbook, re-worked and incorporated into Charalambides' dark, hypnotic ambience to create a set of mysterious, warped protest songs. 'Likeness' may not be as astonishingly captivating as 2004's 'Joy Shapes' or as inviting as its predecessor 'A Vintage Burden', but it is nonetheless a worthy addition to Charalambides' impressive legacy.
