Class of '67, rock and pop
Forever Changes: ExpandedForever Changes: Expanded by Love
Buy new: £4.72 / Used from: £3.44
A paranoia-soaked masterpiece. I know this may seem controversial for first place, but Sgt. Pepper really isn't that fantastic.
Are You Experienced: RemasteredAre You Experienced: Remastered by Jimi Hendrix
Buy new: £7.77 / Used from: £5.26
Jimi's first and best LP, nicely displaying his wide range of influences. I chose the US version because I think it has a much better flow than the British version.
Surrealistic PillowSurrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane
Buy new: £4.56 / Used from: £3.67
Arguably the greatest psychedelic album of all time. I'd disagree if you did, and it's not my favourite Airplane record, but it's still stands as one of the '60s greatest.
Safe As Milk: RemasteredSafe As Milk: Remastered by Captain Beefheart
Buy new: £2.98 / Used from: £2.62
More bluesy and, let's be honest CB fans, enjoyable than Trout Mask Replica. A good place to start with CB, but I don't think the best...
Absolutely FreeAbsolutely Free by The Mothers of Invention
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £5.23
A bit of a sophomore slump compared to Freak Out!, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a fantastic album.
The Piper at the Gates of DawnThe Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £6.98
Psychedelic pop taken to the extreme. Brilliant examples of acid rock and psychedelia.
Easter EverywhereEaster Everywhere by 13th Floor Elevators
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £4.99
Not quite as brilliant as The Psychedelic Sounds of..., but still great. See where Primal Scream got "Slip Inside This House" from, and how much better the original is.
Between The ButtonsBetween The Buttons by The Rolling Stones
Buy new: £5.47 / Used from: £6.97
Is this the Stones' pop masterpiece, or would that be Aftermath? Whatever, they're both great and prove how great the Stones could be at so many genres.
The Velvet Underground and NicoThe Velvet Underground and Nico by Velvet Underground
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £2.50
Most find this difficult because the tempo is neither slow and lilting nor quick and galloping, but that's part of the genius. Come see the most influential rock album of them all!
John Wesley HardingJohn Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan
Buy new: £4.23 / Used from: £2.85
Surprisingly underrated and overlooked effort from Bob considering it contains one of his biggest songs (guess).
Disraeli GearsDisraeli Gears by Cream
Buy new: £2.98 / Used from: £3.95
Wonderful piece of psychedelic hard rock, and Cream's undisputable masterwork.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club BandSgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles
Buy new: £7.58 / Used from: £5.35
Never been a massive Beatles fan, but to exclude Sgt Pepper from this list would be a lie. I rather like it, despite it being very overrated. Their biggest abandonement of pop and rock
Wild HoneyWild Honey by The Beach Boys
Buy used from: £22.95
Brian Wilson finally realises that he needn't give himself shizophrenia to make a great pop record. Quite a daring release for its time (white soul record put out at the height of psychedelia)
The Who Sell OutThe Who Sell Out by The Who
Buy new: £3.97 / Used from: £3.46
I would rate this higher if it wasn't quite as sloppy as it is. Still, a great album with a fun concept nonetheless.
Something Else By The KinksSomething Else By The Kinks by The Kinks
Buy new: £4.01 / Used from: £3.89
Containing some of Dave's best work. Not their best work, though - try Village Green or Arthur.
Strange Days: Remastered & ExpandedStrange Days: Remastered & Expanded by Doors
Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £4.13
Contrary to popular consensus, I rate this much higer than their debut. Very spooky!
Their Satanic Majesties RequestTheir Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £10.50
Hugely underrated, but it does *just* fail at trumping Sgt Pepper. Almost, boys, but "She's A Rainbow" sure gives "A Day In The Life" a run for its money.
Younger Than Yesterday: RemasteredYounger Than Yesterday: Remastered by The Byrds
Buy new: £3.96 / Used from: £5.93
Jingle-jangle. 'Nuff said. [note: unfinished list. will complete later]
