Female Voices: Great Music/Recent Finds.
The Pirate's GospelThe Pirate's Gospel by Alela Diane
Buy new: £6.92 / Used from: £8.98
Fantastic album my most played of last year(and this). If you like Be Good Tanyas, Gillian Welch, Josephine Foster... Very soulful voice. Rough Trade's album of 2007 and mine too.
Faces in the RocksFaces in the Rocks by Mariee Sioux
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £22.01
I found this artist, by chance, at about the same time as Alela Diane. Long poetic pieces over gorgeous N.Drake like guitar rhythms.Beautiful voice. Has invoked comparisons to Joanna Newsom.
Until Death ComesUntil Death Comes by Frida Hyvonen
Buy new: £9.83 / Used from: £15.09
Reminds me of Nina Nastasia and Regina Spektor with out being particularly like either. Swedish, although you'd not know it just listening to the music.
On LeavingOn Leaving by Nina Nastasia
Buy new: £5.31 / Used from: £5.41
Speaking of Nina. Her finest to date and one of the finest albums by a female artist in recent times.
Begin To HopeBegin To Hope by Regina Spektor
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £4.99
...and speaking of Regina. Quirkily magnificent. Long may she reign.
Hazel Eyes I Will Lead YouHazel Eyes I Will Lead You by Josephine Foster
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £6.18
From 'opera school drop out' to mysterious alt-folk siren. A gorgeous album to bewitch and beguile.
Wild and UndauntedWild and Undaunted by Lisa Knapp
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £20.97
Every few years an artist comes along that, it is suggested, will take folk into the mainstream. This artist is the first, in a very long, time that is good enough to do it.
Night VisitingNight Visiting by Bella Hardy
Buy new: £9.98
I would compare her to Lisa Knapp in that she blends new and old seamlessly. A must for anyone who likes folk with an english flavour.
The Bells of 1 2The Bells of 1 2 by Sol Seppy
Buy new: £5.88 / Used from: £9.48
Gorgeous stuff from one-time Sparklehorse collaborator. Gets better with every play.
Sarabeth TucekSarabeth Tucek by Sarabeth Tucek
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £5.75
New discovery this. Brilliant voice, fantastic songs. Reminds me of Aimee Mann's "Whatever" with a hint of Cat Power's "The Greatest". Best of 2007?
Sunny Border BlueSunny Border Blue by Kristin Hersh
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £3.77
A recent find, if not such a recent album. Every song(except the first)is a very strong tune. The lyrics are dark but with humour too.
5:555:55 by Charlotte Gainsbourg
Buy used from: £5.60
A superb collaboration that has surely surpassed all expectations. If you are wondering if this is worth a try: It is!
YsYs by Joanna Newsom
Buy new: £6.03 / Used from: £5.00
Still the hottest thing around.
Espers IIEspers II by Espers
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.94
This album just grows and grows. Can't wait for the new one.
Brightblack Morning LightBrightblack Morning Light by Brightblack Morning Light
Buy new: £6.36 / Used from: £6.16
Its funky! but in a really slow gentle way. Relax your mind...
FeathersFeathers by Feathers
Buy new: £5.81 / Used from: £7.70
Stunning quality debut. Like Espers/Bright Black Morning Light? this is for you. Floaty.
White ChalkWhite Chalk by PJ Harvey
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £5.29
If Dylan created a consternation in the ranks of his fans by plugging in, PJ seems to have done something similar by unplugging. Give it a try.
Volta: +DVDVolta: +DVD by Bjork
Buy new: £9.48 / Used from: £6.70
Nother one that seems to be splitting opinions. But Bjork is always worth hearing.
Martha WainwrightMartha Wainwright by Martha Wainwright
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £7.00
Probably the best album of 2005. Still sounds great. Has a great emotional range.
The Sleep Shelter EpThe Sleep Shelter Ep by Rachel Goswell
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £2.75
I originally intended to include the album but this is better. Good stuff, in a Beth Orton vein, from the Mojave 3 singer.
FireproofFireproof by Dawn Landes
Buy new: £6.98 / Used from: £6.39
If you like Americana as a genre then this is sure to delight. She's been around for a while but this is her first release with a bit of push behind it.
You Sound ReflectYou Sound Reflect by Tara Jane O'Neil
Buy new: £7.99 / Used from: £1.28
Hard to categorise. When she sings she reminds me of Nina Nastasia but she also does some near-ambient/post rock instrumentals. High quality stuff.
Seventh TreeSeventh Tree by Goldfrapp
Buy new: £8.98 / Used from: £6.47
Not quite ready to replace "Felt Mountain" in my affections but very enjoyable.
Alas I Cannot SwimAlas I Cannot Swim by Laura Marling
Buy new: £10.13 / Used from: £6.75
In terms of commercial impact she may have made a smaller impression than her counter-parts but she may turn out to be the best long term bet. Exceeds expectations.
Keep Your Silver ShinedKeep Your Silver Shined by Devon Sproule
Buy new: £3.38 / Used from: £12.17
Wow what a find! Caught her on "Later" and by the 2nd song I was hooked. Reminds me of the first 2 Kate and Anna McGarrigle albums, with a touch of The Roches thrown in for good measure.
