CD Description
The X-Factor sensations follow their chart-topping single 'Beat Again' with this debut album. Their roguish good looks and cheeky nature (the name stands for "Jack The Lad Swing")have seen them swooned over by teenage girls across the nation and this set of catchy pop tracks, infused with RnB and hip-hop, looks set to catapult them to even greater levels of fame. Produced by Syco stable regular Steve Mac, it includes the aforementioned 'Beat Again' as well as second single 'Everybody In Love'.

Disappointing...but there are a few gems!
On a first listen you would be forgiven for writing the debut album from JLS off as a bunch of songs rejected from the latest BSB album, but give it a chance....there are a few gems!
'Beat Again' needs no introduction as it was a massive hit in the charts! 6/10
'Everybody In Love' again needs no reviewing whatsoever. Definitely a fave of mine! 8/10
'Keep You' is a really funky, fun, dance-pop track. The vocals in this song are so smooth it brings sexiness to the song in massive amounts. The concept of the song is very cute and slightly cheesy but the funkiness really works, I can imagine a full on dance routine going on in the chorus if this has a video made for it. Love the punchy melody! 8/10
'Crazy For You' sounds like it should have been on Westlife's FIRST album. TOO cheesy for JLS. NEXT! 3/10
'Heal This Heartbreak' could easily be mistaken for one of the more recent Backstreet Boys album tracks, the vocals sound very American. 6/10
'Close To You' has such a sweet vibe throughout. The song reminds me a lot of the Chris Brown song 'With You', but a very stripped down, more gentle song. The acoustic feel, with the soulful R&B vox really just make this song beautiful. Aston does a great job and carries this song, when the other guys come in for their verses you sort of wish it was just down to Aston to polish this one off. Still a gorgeous song though. 9/10
'Only Tonight' is my definite favourite...I instantly fell in love with the sing along melody of the chorus and the harmonies which really set this song apart from the rest for me. I just love it! 10/10
And after the highs...the rest of the album I could do without to be honest. The first half is definitely the better half, it makes me wish they had mixed it up a little more to have the "fillers" blend in more. For me, 'Private' is the worst track. It's one of those songs you forget as soon as you hear it. I give these boys credit, they have got some great songs/singles, some great voices and they co-wrote 9 out of 13 songs which is unheard of in boybands. Overall, the hardcore fans will fall in love with this album, the ones who were curious will pick out a handful of faves and forget the rest...I don't think JLS will gain any new fans or break any grounds with their debut...maybe next time!
An overall good first album!
Love JLS, and after a few listens of each song there definately is some good songs if you are into catchy pop songs, their voices all sound really good on here too. "Keep you" "one shot" and "close to you" are all different, show different styles of song from the boys, but are all very good :) quite impressed.
Addicted to a few very good songs!!! 13 not enough
I was first sceptical on listening to this album, after reading the reviews on here. Fans rating it 5 out of 5 before it even came out, and others rating it 1 just because they dislike boy-bands/pop music/x factor etc... I did like them on X factor last year, I thought Aston's voice was amazing. When Beat Again was released, I was instantly hooked with the catchy upbeats and ohh woahs. Everybody In Love was definately a great follow-up that makes you sing along with them everytime you hear it.
Now the album, when I first listened to it, there were a couple of songs that immediately stood out and I thought were excellent: Heal this Heartbreak, Dont Go and Kickstart. But I felt disappointed as 13 songs (well 11 new songs)were just not enough for me, lol. I then continued to listen to this album everyday in my car, and now I must say, that almost all the tracks on the album are amazing! I am hooked! Their vocals are really good. I love how they can vary the way they sing. I find myself dancing to the songs in my car and getting strange looks from others.
My ultimate fav on the album is "Dont Go". My other favs are: "Keep You" and "Only Tonight". Being someone who is addicted to ballads, I find this album has changed me, and I much prefer JLS's uptempo tracks with catchy beats, than their ballads. The best ballad from the lot for me would be "Crazy for You", which I think is their third single release. I wish it wasn't though. The only song I dislike is "Tightrope", I just find it boring lol.
Overall I give this 4 out of 5, as it has a few very very good songs that are worth a listen, and worth being singles in my opinion. My only disappointment is that I wish there were more songs on the album. I did not know they had written 9 out of the 13 songs, could someone let me know which songs they wrote? Well done JLS! A great start to music! Thanks. x
