Not exactly what I expected ... but fun nonetheless.
I am amazed how little coverage this game has had. It might be one of Square Enix's side projects but usually their fan base is militant in ensuring we know how great their games are. And here is one slightly militant fan telling you how good this game is; I won't be too bias though because I came into this game with high expectations only to find them shattered. Having played and loved the DS game chocobo tales I assumed that I would be buying a game very similar to that; a game made up of challenging minigames... I was WRONG! This game is nothing like Chocobo tales. Once I finally got over my disappointment at that I fished the controller back out from the television screen (only joking... use your wriststraps people) and wiped the tears out of my eyes and set about trying to enjoy a totally different game.
I am led to believe that this game is a modern remake of a series of games for PS1, I'm not entirely sure they ever reached Britain at all. So what chance does its prettier younger brother have? Very little, whilst in america and Japan hardcore fans of the old chocobo dungeon are enjoying the new romp, whilst people in Britain remain mostly oblivious,
The game follows the story of Cid and his trusty companion chocobo; who incidentally becomes the protagonist, You arrive in a town where everyone has lost their memories and it is your job to reclaim them. So you dive into their minds and have to wander through the annals of their brain and pick out the memories at the end. Sounds simple? Its not. Every time you jump into a mind you are presented with a dungeon. You have to go through the many levels of the dungeon battling monsters before you finally reach the little chunk of memories at the bottom. Gameplay is turn based and each turn you can either attack or move onto another square of the dungeon. By turn based I do not mean FF turn based combat, its a little hard to explain, you attack or move; they attack or move and the whole thing is very quick. Some aspects of the game are very strategy based. In a number of special dungeons the rules change, you might be left blind; only able to see one square ahead, or you might only fight one particularly challenging foe. For example in one dungeon it is vital that you hit the enemy before they hit you making for a difficult and very frustrating evening. I've read that the gameplay is like that of a rogue RPG, which basically means that as you explore each level the map grows with you and each level of the dungeon is randomised with a variety of traps items and monsters. Its fun, interesting and dynamic gameplay.
Typical to Square Enix there is of course the necessary story. Its a little kidsy, and frustrating because unlike the FF games they seemed to have rushed it meaning there are big pauses between each characters words. It is also voice acted. Which mostly is fine; I love the voice acting done by the person playing the moogle Dungeon Hero X. Its cheesy and american, but its not so bad I can't play the game. I guess for this reason I am giving the game four stars instead of five. As per always Square Enix has you sit back and endure what would be an awful kid's film before letting you return to gameplay which could make a grown man weep. It has yet to make me weep, but there is still time. The fact is the gameplay is tough but satisfying when you complete a difficult dungeon.
Now the boring unimportant stuff that people seem to care about; graphics are pretty and cutesy, but not amazing certainly they can't hold up to PS3 or Xbox 360, but you knew that already. I would say this game would look the same if it was on a PS2 or a Gamecube; but there's been nothing dire. The music and sounds are very good. They have the whole breadth of Square Enix sounds at their disposal and they do a great job.
Overall this is a game I do not regret buying. It surprised me, but after and hour or two of play I realised that perhaps being surprised isn't such a bad thing. There are one or two minigames; as well as the return of the pop-up duel game from the DS version in minigame form; I was pleased... you may not be. I had a lot of fun playing this game.
Gameplay: 9/10
Story: 6/10
Graphics: 8/10
Sounds/Music: 10/10
Overall: 8/10
Great add to your FF Collection
If you're a fan of FF this title is just an interesting and cute addition to your collection. The gameplay is easy and funny but have a great problem (why did you have to lost all the items you've collected from other dungeon if you die in the next one?) The music have tracks of FFVIII and that's great because that's my favourite FF's OST. The CG's are wonderful too.
Replacement purchase
We bought this as a replacemnt for "Zak & Wiki" for our 7yr old daughter and 5yr old son (they "lost" Zak & Wiki somehow!!!).
It must be a good game as they "healthily contest" who will be playing first :)
Note: I haven't played this game yet, but since we bought this we have actually found our copy of Zak & Wiki - and the kids haven't even bothered with it. Therefore this must serve as a measure of how good Chocobo's Dungeon is as I think Z&W is a fantastic game!
