Customer Reviews

Excellent stepping stone5
This is a clear and concise book telling you everything you need to know to step up from an amateur camera operator to a good semi professional standard. If you want to become a professional, I would start here, follow Peter's guidelines and then go out and shoot.

Excellent, no-nonsense introduction5
This is for anyone who prefers simple and straightforward explanation. It's clearly written and illustrated by someone who has enough practical experience to keep you focused on what matters. Although there's a place for the chatty 'for dummies' kind of book, it's refreshing to come across something like this which gets the job done with no fuss.

Cheap too.

Good practical advice5
I will start by saying that I'm not a great reader of novels, partially because we live in a world where so much other stuff demands our attention. I have found this book very easy to read and all the sections are not excessively long, presented in a very logical and accesible manner.
The writer approaches the subject in a very practical way and chapters such as 'in the real world' amplify this. Subjects include weddings and events like birthdays and concerts - including both tips and warnings of potential pitfalls. Although the notes on the back cover imply this is ideal for film makers on a zero budget, the book investigates external mics and steadishot equipment.
One thing that isn't mentioned is video editing software which is not a bad thing (I suspect the diversity of video editing programs and attempts to provide tutorials is what has effectively finished off mainstream camcorder monthly magazines)
A lot of the points mentioned will be known to experienced film makers, but it makes a great refresher and reference.
Overall I would thoroughly recommend this book.
Great price too.
